Oriana (horse)
Oriana (1807 – after 1826) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won the classic Oaks Stakes at Epsom Downs Racecourse in 1810. The Northern-trained filly won the Oaks on her first appearance and finished third against colts in the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster in her only other race that year. She won one of her three races in 1811 and was later exported to become a broodmare in Ireland. Background Oriana was a bay mare bred by her owner Sir William Gerard of Garswood in Lancashire. She was the ninth foal of Mary Ann, a mare bred by Mr Clifton. Mary Ann had previously produced Ashton, a successful stayer in the North of England whose wins included the Richmond Gold Cup. Katharine Mosse (born 20 October 1961) is a British novelist, non-fiction and short story writer and broadcaster. She is best known for her 2005 novel ''Labyrinth'', which has been translated into more than 37 languages. Early life and career Mosse was born in Chichester, and raised in Fishbourne, West Sussex, the eldest of three sisters born to a solicitor, Richard (1920–2011) and Barbara (1931–2014). Mosse's aunt was involved in the campaign for the ordination of women and her grandfather was a vicar. ''Labyrinth'' is an archaeological mystery English-language novel written by Kate Mosse set both in the Middle Ages and present-day France. It was published in 2005. It divides into two main storylines that follow two protagonists, Alaïs (from the year 1209) and Alice (in the year 2005). The two stories occur in a shared geography and intertwine. The novel relies heavily on historical events such as the massacre at Béziers and the Crusade against the Cathars in Occitania, now the South of France, from around 1200. The text itself features many Occitan and French quotes. Ultimately the story becomes a quest for the Holy Grail. In the 2006 British Book Awards, ''Labyrinth'' was awarded ''Best Read of the Year''. Paul Loup Karl Sulitzer (born 22 July 1946, in Boulogne-Billancourt) is a French financier and author. Before he turned seventeen, he was already a self-made millionaire. Sulitzer used his financial experience and knowledge in his books, which often related to the business world. Many of his books were ghost-written by Loup Durand. Biography Sulitzer's father was a Jewish immigrant from Romania who died when Sulitzer was 10. Six years later Sulitzer joined a trading company that operated in the Middle East. James Albery (4 May 1838 – 15 August 1889) was an English dramatist. Life and career Albery was born in London. On leaving school he entered an architect's office and started to write plays. His farce ''A Pretty Piece of Chiselling'' was given its first production by the Ingoldsby Club in 1864. After some failures, his adaptation, ''Dr Davy'', was produced at the Lyceum Theatre, London (1866). His most successful piece, ''Two Roses'', a comedy, was produced at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1870, in which Sir Henry Irving made one of his earliest London successes as Digby Grant. ''Kiss My Axe'' is an album by jazz guitarist Al Di Meola that was released in 1991. It is a jazz fusion album, with significant world music influences. Like its predecessor, '' Tirami Su'' (1987), it is credited to "The Al Di Meola Project", although the two albums have an almost entirely different set of backing musicians. The album's title is a play on words on the phrase "kiss my ass", with "axe" as a common nickname for an electric guitar. Di Meola chose the title in part because of his frustration with the music industry of the time, which he felt rewarded " elevator muzak" over more adventurous music. Uva Rara is a red Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Piedmont and Lombardy wine regions of northern Italy. The grape is a permitted blending variety along with Nebbiolo in the '' Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita'' (DOCG) wines of Ghemme. In the ''Denominazione di Origine Controllata'' (DOC) wine region of Oltrepò Pavese the grape is often blended with Barbera and Croatina. SS ''Oriana'' was the last of the Orient Steam Navigation Company's ocean liners. She was built at Vickers-Armstrongs, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England and launched on 3 November 1959 by Princess Alexandra. Originally resplendent with her owners' traditional corn-coloured hull, ''Oriana'' appeared as an Orient Line ship until 1966, when that company was fully absorbed into the P&O group. Faced with unprofitable around-the-world passenger routes, the P&O white hulled ''Oriana'' was operated as a full-time cruise ship from 1973. Between 1981 and her retirement from service five years later, ''Oriana'' was based at Sydney, Australia, operating to Pacific Ocean and South-East Asian ports. ''Oriana'' is a 1985 Venezuelan film directed by Fina Torres and written by Antoine Lacomblez and Torres herself.
