Orestimba Creek
Orestimba Creek, originally Arroyo de Orestimba (Orestimba, a Yokutsan word for "meeting place") is a tributary of the San Joaquin River draining eastern slopes of part of the Diablo Range within the San Joaquin Valley of California. The Creek has its source at the confluence of the north and south forks of Orestimba Creek and its mouth at the San Joaquin River, is about 7 1/2 miles north of Newman in Stanislaus County.U.S. Geological Survey. Yokuts, formerly known as Mariposa, is an endangered language spoken in the interior of Northern and Central California in and around the San Joaquin Valley by the Yokuts people. The speakers of Yokuts were severely affected by disease, missionaries, and the Gold Rush. While descendants of Yokuts speakers currently number in the thousands, most of the constituent dialects are now extinct. Rancho Orestimba y Las Garzas (Meetingplace and the Herons) was a Mexican land grant in present-day Stanislaus County and Merced County, California given in 1844 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Sebastián Núñez. The grant was originally in a part of Tuolumne County that became part of Stanislaus County in 1854. The grant was located west of the San Joaquin River and south of Rancho Del Puerto, and encompassed present-day Newman. The Diablo Range is a mountain range in the California Coast Ranges subdivision of the Pacific Coast Ranges in northern California, United States. It stretches from the eastern San Francisco Bay area at its northern end to the Salinas Valley area at its southern end.
