Oregon Natural Desert Association
The Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA) is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to protect, defend, and restore the wild lands of eastern Oregon. It was founded in 1987. Campaigns ONDA's efforts have included protecting habitat for wildlife at Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge and on the Owyhee River. Recently the group has focused on the creation, mapping and marking of a wilderness hiking trail from Bend, Oregon to the Idaho border. This trail, now known as the Oregon Desert Trail, has won accolades from outdoor groups and publications. Beginning at the end of January 2016, ONDA, along with other Oregon-based conservation groups, began efforts to mobilize volunteers who are interested in assisting environmental restoration at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge after the militant occupation there ends. Oregon Desert Trail
The Oregon Desert Trail is a network of trails, cross country travel and two-track dirt roads across the Oregon High Desert. The trail is approximately 750 miles long, with termini located near Bend, Oregon, and near the Idaho border at Lake Owyhee State Park. The route is on existing trails and across tracts of public land—mostly Bureau of Land Management, much of it wilderness study area. The west end of the trail is on the northern border of Oregon Badlands Wilderness and heads south. Occupation Of The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
On January 2, 2016, an armed group of far-right extremists seized and occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon, and continued to occupy it until law enforcement made a final arrest on February 11, 2016. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located roughly south of the city of Burns in Oregon's Harney Basin. Administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge area is roughly T-shaped with the southernmost base at Frenchglen, the northeast section at Malheur Lake and the northwest section at Harney Lake. Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge
Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge on Hart Mountain in southeastern Oregon, which protects more than and more than 300 species of wildlife, including pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mule deer, sage grouse, and Great Basin redband trout.
