Oreasteridae
The Oreasteridae are a family of sea stars in the class Asteroidea. Description and characteristics This family contains many species of regular starfishes with usually 5 arms around a stiff, convex and often brightly colored body. Whereas some species are very easy to identify, like the "pincushion seastars" ('' Culcita sp.''), some other can be difficult to tell apart. Choriaster Granulatus
''Choriaster'' is monotypic genus in the family Oreasteridae containing the single species ''Choriaster granulatus'' commonly known as the granulated sea star. Other common names include big-plated sea star and doughboy starfish. This species is harmless to humans. Description ''Choriaster granulatus'' is a large sea star with a convex body and five short arms. The arms have rounded tips, making it appear "chubby", leading to one of its common names being "the doughboy starfish". Relatively large in comparison with other sea stars, its maximum radius is about . It is most commonly pale pink in colour with brown papillae radiating out from the centre but can also be colours ranging from grey to yellow and even red. Location This species is found in numerous tropical waters, including: * East Africa * Indo-Pacific region * Great Barrier Reef * Red Sea * Vanuatu * Fiji * Papua New Guinea Habitat ''Choriaster granulatus'' prefers shallow waters ranging from deep and above ...

Culcita Novaeguineae
''Culcita novaeguineae'' (common name, cushion star) is a species of starfish. It has short arms and an inflated appearance and resembles a pentagonal pincushion. It is variable in colour and can be found in tropical warm waters in the Indo-Pacific. Taxonomy ''C. novaeguineae'' has numerous synonyms, at least in part because it has a "goniasterid" phase; the juveniles exhibit little resemblance to the mature form, and gradually change in morphology as they grow. A number of different "species" were described in the literature before they were found to be different developmental stages of the same species. Some were even considered to be in a different family, the Goniasteridae, rather than in the correct family, Oreasteridae. The Cushio ...

Astrosarkus Idipi
''Astrosarkus idipi'' is a species of sea stars in the family Oreasteridae. It is the sole species in the genus ''Astrosarkus''. It is sometimes referred to as a "Pumpkin sea star". Description and characteristics It is a big sea star with a subpentagonal and very plump body. It is quite recognizable because of its bright orange color, and globally displays the color, texture and size of a pumpkin. It is thus a very big star, measuring approximately 30 cm in diameter for 10 cm high. The lower face is white dirtied with orange, and crossed by 5 ambulacral grooves. Inside the body, the skeleton is strikingly reduced: the main part of the mass of the star is muscular.Christopher L. Mah,Astrosarkus: Discovering The Great Pumpkin Starfish ! First video of this species alive !, on ''The Echinoblog'', 12 october 2009. Habitat and repartition This sea star lives in the sub-reef zone, between 67 and 200 m deep, and seems rather widely distributed in the Indo-pacific, From ...
