Order Of The Northwest Territories
The Order of the Northwest Territories (french: Ordre des Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a civil honour for merit in the Canadian territory of the Northwest Territories. Instituted in 2013, it is the highest honour which can be bestowed by the Government of the Northwest Territories. It is intended to honour current and former residents of the territory who have served with the great distinction and excelling in any field of endeavour for the benefit the people of the Northwest Territories and others. The commissioner of the Northwest Territories is a member of the order by virtue of their position, and serves as the chancellor of the order. Commissioner Of The Northwest Territories
The commissioner of the Northwest Territories (french: Commissaire des Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is the Government of Canada's representative in the Northwest Territories. Similar in certain functions to a lieutenant governor, the commissioner swears in the members of the legislative assembly, swears in members of the executive council, assents to bills, opens sessions of the legislative assembly, and signs other government documents such as Orders in Council. Earlier commissioners were mostly deputy ministers in various ministries (Minister of the Interior, Mines, Mines and Resources). Sharon Firth
Sharon Firth (born 31 December 1953) is a Canadian former cross-country skier who competed in the Winter Olympics in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. Firth's mother was Gwich'in and her father was Métis. She and her sister grew up in the Gwich'in First Nation. She is the twin sister of fellow ski team member Shirley Firth. They became the first indigenous women to be inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. Firth received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the sports category in 2005. Marie Wilson is a journalist and public administrator who served as one of three commissioners of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). Born in Petrolia, Ontario, Petrolia, Ontario, Wilson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in French language and literature and a Master of Arts degree in journalism, both from the University of Western Ontario. Nellie Cournoyea (born March 4, 1940 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories) is a Canadian politician, who served as the sixth premier of the Northwest Territories from 1991 to 1995. She was the first female premier of a Canadian territory and the second female premier in Canadian history after Rita Johnston of British Columbia. Cournoyea is of mixed Norwegian and Inupiaq heritage. George Tuccaro (born May 12, 1950) was the commissioner of the Northwest Territories. He served in that position from May 12, 2010 until May 10, 2016. Biography George Tuccaro was born on May 12, 1950, in northern Alberta. A member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, Tuccaro began a career in broadcasting in 1971, when he became an Announcer-Operator with CBC North Radio in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. In 1979, Tuccaro joined the public service, becoming a communications officer with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.
