The Order of Naval Merit ( pt, Ordem do Mérito Naval) is a Brazilian military decoration Military awards and decorations are distinctions given as a mark of honor for military heroism, meritorious or outstanding service or achievement. DoD Manual 1348.33, 2010, Vol. 3 A decoration is often a medal consisting of a ribbon and a medal ... established on 4 July 1934 by president Getúlio Vargas. Design On the obverse side of the medal is the effigy of the republic, surrounded by a circle of blue enamel, on which is written the words "Naval Merit". On the reverse side, the word "Brasil" is inscribed in the same blue circle. The medal is composed with a red grosgrain ribbon, or ''chamalotada'', with a light blue stripe in the center. An order is a visible honour awarded by a sovereign state, monarch, Dynasty, dynastic house or organisation to a person, typically in recognition of individual Meritocracy, merit, that often comes with distinctive insignia such as Collar (order), collars, medals, badges, and sashes worn by recipients. Getúlio Dornelles Vargas (; 19 April 1882 – 24 August 1954) was a Brazilian lawyer and politician who served as the 14th and 17th president of Brazil, from 1930 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954. Due to his long and controversial tenure as Brazil's provisional, constitutional, and dictatorial leader, he is considered by historians as the most influential Brazilian politician of the 20th century.
