Orchids Of Manipur (film)
''Orchids of Manipur'' ( mni, Manipurgi Urei) is a 1993 non-feature Indian Meitei language film scripted by M. K. Binodini Devi and directed by Aribam Syam Sharma. It is produced by Sh. Tomchou Singh under the banner of Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC) Limited. The film was screened at the second edition of Fragrances from the North East 2014, a three-day festival of cinema from the northeast. It was screened at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2019, Japan. The film also participated in International Wildlife Film Festival 1994, Morocco. Synopsis The film is a journey through the rich forests of Manipur that are home to beautiful varieties of orchids. Over four hundred species have been identified so far, and some of them are found exclusively in Manipur. The soil and climate of Manipur are very conducive to the growth of orchids and seventy percent of the varieties of orchids available in South-East Asia are found in Manipur. Aribam Syam Sharma
Aribam Syam Sharma is an Indian filmmaker and composer from Manipur. He debuted in the first Manipuri film ''Matamgi Manipur'' as an actor. In 1974, he directed his first movie ''Lamja Parshuram''. It became the first Manipuri film to run for 100 days in the box office. His 1979 film ''Olangthagee Wangmadasoo'' was the first ever and the only Manipuri film to run for 32 weeks. It also broke the local box office records of ''Sholay''. His fourth film as a director, ''Imagi Ningthem'' (My Son, My precious) brought him international recognition when the film received the ''Montgolfiere d' Or'' at the ''Festival of Three Continents'', Nantes in 1982. His 1990 film ''Ishanou'' (The Chosen One) was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival
The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival is a documentary film festival held biennially in Yamagata, Japan ( ). It was first held in October 1989, which makes it one of the longest running documentary film festivals in the world and the most distinguished such festival in Asia. Its emphasis is on showcasing best achievements in documentary filmmaking, as well as promoting and popularizing the genre and documentary filmmaking in the region.
