In July 1989, Pidemco Holdings announced plans to turn Orchard Point into a centre for arts and crafts. The shopping centre received a $29 million face-lift in 1991. The facelift also included the introduction of two curved escalators, making Orchard Point the first shopping centre in Singapore to have curved escalators. Following the facelift, fashion boutiques Episode, Jessica and Excursion became the mall's anchor tenants. The shopping centre officially reopened on 22 March 1993. Orchard Road
Orchard Road, often known colloquially as simply Orchard, is a major –long road in the Central Area of Singapore. Known as a famous tourist attraction, it is an upscale shopping area of Singapore, with numerous internationally renowned department stores, restaurants and coffeehouses located in its vicinity. The Orchard Planning Area is a planning area as specified by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. It is part of the Central Area located within the Central Region. Orchard is bordered by Newton in the east and north, Tanglin in the west, River Valley in the south and Museum to the southeast. Orchard Road Market
Orchard Road Market, also known as Tang Leng Pa Sat and Tanglin Pa Sat, was a market on Orchard Road in Singapore. Built in 1891, the market was demolished in 1982 to make way for redevelopments along Orchard Road. History The market was built in 1891 as a replacement of the Orchard Road Municipal Market, originally known as Koek's Market after its original owner, lawyer Edwin Koek, which was found to be inadequate. The new market only had one wing. In 1902, a six-metre-tall cast-iron fountain made in Glasgow was placed in the market. An expansion was made to the market in 1910, adding another wing and a concrete frontage. The structure was raised a few years later due to frequent flooding. A second building was constructed in 1930, costing $25,000. In 1948, members of the Municipal Commission of Singapore began contemplating adding a second floor to the market, as the market was too small to serve the increasing population of the district. The New Paper
''The New Paper'' is a Singaporean newspaper in tabloid form. It was originally published as a "noon paper", but since 2016 has been published daily as a freesheet in the morning from 7 a.m. onwards. History First launched on 26 July 1988, by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), it had an average daily circulation of 101,600 in August 2010, according to SPH. In 1991, the paper organised the New Paper Big Walk, a mass-participation walking event. The event came to be held annually in Singapore. It holds the official Guinness World Record as world's largest walk when a record-breaking 77,500 participants joined on 21 May 2000. There is also a noon edition that hits the newsstands on Mondays and Thursdays that gives more special coverage of late-night association football matches that occur after the morning edition goes to press.
