Oranje Nassau Mijnen
The Oranje Nassau Mijnen was a coal mine company, established in 1893 by Friedrich Honigmann (1841-1913) and Carl Honigmann (1842-1903) to exploit the rich coal deposits in and around Heerlen. That there were coal deposits around Heerlen was already known for centuries (coal had been dug up since the 13th century around Rolduc), but efficient transportation was lacking. In 1886 Henri Sarolea (January 18, 1844, Maastricht - September 12, 1900, Heerlen) had the idea of building a railroad between Herzogenrath, Heerlen, and Sittard, which was finished in 1896. It was this plan that prompted the building of the first mine ( Oranje Nassau I, production from 1899 to 1974). While Oranje Nassau Mijnen was the public name of the company, the legal name was N.V. Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Limburgsche Steenkolenmijnen. Oranje Nassau II
The Oranje Nassau II was a Dutch coal mine located in Schaesberg. The mine was in operation from 1904 until 1971. Oranje Nassau IV
The Oranje Nassau IV (located in Heerlerheide, Heerlen), the last and smallest mine exploited by the Oranje Nassau Mijnen, started its life as a ventilation shaft for Oranje Nassau III. In 1910 the construction of a mine shaft was started. However the construction was halted and only reassumed in 1919. In 1927 the mine became operational. Underground, the mine was connect to the Oranje Nassau III and, for safety reasons, also the Staatsmijn Hendrik. In 1966 it became the first of the Oranje Nassau mines to close; however, via Oranje Nassau III mining activities continued till 1973. In its short life it produced of coal. The mine was deep.
