Orange-spotted Bulbul
The orange-spotted bulbul (''Pycnonotus bimaculatus'') is a species of songbird in the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is endemic to Java, Bali and Sumatra. It favors forest edges and open meadows in montane forests. Taxonomy and systematics The orange-spotted bulbul was originally described in the genus ''Turdus'' by Thomas Horsfield in 1821. Until 2016, the Aceh bulbul (''Pycnonotus snouckaerti'') was considered as a subspecies of the orange-spotted bulbul until split by the IOC. Most other authorities have not yet recognized this split. Subspecies Two subspecies are recognized: * ''P. b. bimaculatus'' – (Horsfield, 1821): Found on south-western Sumatra, western and central Java * ''P. b. tenggerensis'' – ( van Oort, 1911): Found on eastern Java and Bali Description Up to 20 cm long. Thomas Horsfield
Thomas Horsfield (May 12, 1773 – July 24, 1859) was an American physician and natural history, naturalist who worked extensively in Indonesia, describing numerous species of plants and animals from the region. He was later a curator of the East India Company Museum in London. Early life Horsfield was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He was the grandson of Timothy Horsfield, Sr. (1708-1773), who was born in Liverpool and emigrated to New York in 1725. In New York, his brother Isaac and he ran a butcher shop. The Horsfield family converted from the Church of England to Moravianism, a Protestant denomination with a strong emphasis on education. In 1748, Horsfield, Sr. applied for permission to reside in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He, however, moved only his family to Bethlehem and joined them the next year. Eduard Daniël Van Oort
Eduard Daniël van Oort (31 October 1876 in Barneveld, Gelderland – 21 September 1933 in Leiden) was a Dutch ornithologist. Oort was in charge of the bird collections at the Rijksmuseum of Natural History in Leiden; in 1915 he was made Director of this museum, a position which he held until his death.
