Oppikoppi
Oppikoppi was a music festival held in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, near the mining town of Northam. The festival started off focusing mostly on rock music, but gradually added more genres and now plays host to a complete mixed bag of genres. Anything from jazz, world music, house music, acoustic, comedy and all else in between can be heard on one of the multiple stages. Each year in the first week of August - except for 2017, when the festival was held in October - thousands of people used to flock to the farm to camp out in the bush and enjoy the music for several days. The festival features mostly South African bands, although international acts are included in the line-up. Background "Oppikoppi" was a colloquial abbreviation of the Afrikaans phrase "op die koppie", which literally means "on the hill". Battery 9
Battery 9 (pronounced, in Afrikaans, as ''Butteray Nea-ge''), an industrial music project from Johannesburg, South Africa, is the brainchild of Paul Riekert, who writes, plays and records the music in a mixture of English and Afrikaans. The band name is sometimes written, without a space, as Battery9. History Riekert started recording under the name Battery 9 in 1994, bored with the creative constraints of a standard rock band format. A platform to run various projects from, One F Music, was subsequently founded, in the form of an independent record label and a small home studio. The first Battery 9 album, ''Protskrog'', was released in 1995. The Awakening (band)
The Awakening is a South African gothic metal band founded in Johannesburg in 1995 by vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ashton Nyte. The sound has been described as a hybrid of gothic metal, gothic rock, darkwave, industrial rock, and new wave – a combination that was loosely described by Nyte in 1999 as "dark future rock." Northam, South Africa
Northam is a town in the Waterberg District Municipality in the Limpopo province of South Africa, 54 km south of Thabazimbi. History The town was proclaimed in 1946 by E.H.J. Fulls on the farm ''Leeukoppie'', which belonged to H. Herd, and was originally one of a number of farms allocated to British veterans of the Anglo-Boer war. Springbok Nude Girls
The Springbok Nude Girls (a.k.a. the Nudies, or the Nude Girls) is a rock band from Cape Town, South Africa. An alternative rock band, the Nude Girls introduced punk rock, ska, acid jazz and heavy metal into their songs, introducing a new world of music to the youth of South Africa in the mid-to-late 1990s. They played their first big gig in September 1994 in Stellenbosch. Since then, the Nude girls have toured extensively. In 2000, the band received a South African Music Award for Best Rock Album (''Surpass The Powers''). The Nude Girls were voted the Best South Africa rock band in a poll conducted by South African radio station 5FM. Break up and reformation In 2001 the band announced an indefinite hiatus. Wendy Oldfield
Wendy Oldfield (born in Cape Town, South Africa) is a South African singer. At the age of nineteen, she formed the rock group The Sweatband, and from 1999 to 2001, she was involved with the band Mondetta. Career In 1983, Oldfield was involved in the forming of Sweatband, a South African music group. She was the lead vocalist of the band, and released two albums. The group's biggest hit was "This Boy" which reached number 15 on the official South African top 20 in September 1986. In 1988, five years after the formation of the band, she left the group and started her own solo career in the music industry. Oldfield first rose to fame with the release of her debut album, ''Beautiful World''. This album won her the 1992 Oktave award for Best Female Vocalist. Urban Creep
Urban Creep were a seminal South African rock band. The band was formed in 1994 and recorded two critically acclaimed albums, `Sea Level` and `Tightroper`. `Sea Level` was nominated for Rock album of the year 1995 at the South African Music Industry awards. `Sea Level` and `Slow Thighs` both got to number 1 on the 5fm top 40 in 1995 and 1997 respectively. Valiant Swart
Valiant Swart (born Pierre Nolte, 25 November 1965), is a South African musician, Afrikaans folk rock singer-songwriter, and actor from Wellington. Career Born in Wellington, he resided in Stellenbosch. In 1977, at 11 years old, Valiant was given a guitar by his father and taught himself to play songs from artists like George Baker and Joe Dolan. Two years later he owned his first electric guitar. He writes and sings in both English and Afrikaans. The work that was begun by artists like Anton Goosen and, later, Koos Kombuis was continued by Swart. Koos Kombuis (born ''André le Roux du Toit'', 5 November 1954) is a South African musician, singer, songwriter and writer who became famous as part of a group of anti-establishment maverick Afrikaans musicians, who, under the collective name of ''Voëlvry'' (directly translated meaning "Free as a bird"; in Afrikaans "voëlvry" is synonymous to the words "fugitive" and "outlaw"), toured campuses across South Africa in the 1980s, to "''liberate Afrikaans from the shackles of its past''".
