Opisthocheiridae is a Family (biology), family of millipedes belonging to the Order (biology), order Chordeumatida. This family includes 40 species distributed among seven Genus, genera. These millipedes are found in western Europe and Morocco. Description Millipedes in this family range from 5 mm to 16 mm in length. The Tergum, paranota are small humps and hardly developed sometimes. The posterior Gonopod, gonopods have from one to three segments. Adult millipedes in this family have 26 or 30 segments (counting the collum as the first segment and the telson as the last). This family includes the cave-dwelling species ''Opisthocheiron canayerensis'', notable as one of only a few chordeumatidan species with only 26 segments in adults, four fewer segments than typically found in adults in this order. Opisthocheiron Canayerensis
''Opisthocheiron canayerensis'' is a species of millipede in the Family (biology), family Opisthocheiridae. This species is found in France, far inside deep caves. This millipede is notable as one of only a few species in the Order (biology), order Chordeumatida with only 26 segments in adults (counting the collum as the first segment and the telson as the last), four fewer segments than typically found in adults this order. Discovery and distribution This species was first described in 1982 by the Myriapodology, myriapodologists Jean-Paul Mauriès and Jean-Jacques Geoffroy. The original description is based on specimens collected in 1981 from the Baume Layrou cave in Trèves, Gard, Trèves, in the eastern part of the Causses, Grands Causses, in the Departments of France, department of Gard in France.
