Opie Cates
Opie Cates (10 October 1909, in Arkansas – 6 November 1987, in Oklahoma) was an American clarinet player and band leader in the 1930s and 1940s, during the swing era, who became a radio actor. Life and career Cates was born Opal Taft Cates, the son of a farmer in Arkansas, and was also raised in Kansas and Missouri. By 1931 he was on the radio with his own band. He served for a time in the 1940s as musical director on radio's '' Judy Canova Show'', where his Arkansas drawl amused audiences when he introduced songs. He then became the star of his own radio sitcom, ''The Opie Cates Show'', on ABC in 1947–1948, where he played a naive rube getting adjusted to big city life. Barbara Fuller played his love interest, with Francis X. Bushman as her father, Opie's boss. Cates would begin each show by saying, "The doggonedest thing happened to me th' other day," and proceed to introduce the episode's plot. The show found no sponsor and lasted only thirteen weeks. Lisa Opie MBE (born on 15 August 1963) is a retired British squash player, who was one of the game's leading woman players in the 1980s and early-1990s. Her biggest successes were winning the British Open in 1991 and four consecutive World Team Championships from 1985 to 1990. Until the rise of Cassie Campion she was England's number 1 player. Born and raised in Guernsey, she was coached in her early years in the game by Reg Harbour. In international competition, she represented England. She was appointed MBE for services to squash in the 1995 New Year's Honours List. In later years she was coached by Gavin Dupre from Jersey. They began working together in Guernsey and Lisa later spent time training with him in Germany where he was based as a professional coach. The Museum of Brands in London examines the history of consumer culture from Victorian times to the present day. The museum was set up as a registered charity in 2002, and is now located at 111-117 Lancaster Rd, Notting Hill, London W11 1QT. Redvers Opie (1900–1984) was a British economist. On the recommendation of John Maynard Keynes, he became the United Kingdom Treasury representative in Washington, D.C., as Counsellor and economic adviser at the British Embassy, 1939–46, and was one of the five members of the UK delegation to the Bretton Woods Conference, which gave birth to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Life Opie married a daughter of the American economist F. W. Tausigg. Opie was educated at Durham University, he taught at Oxford University where he eventually became the Bursar of Magdalen College. June Opie
Alice June Norma Opie (1924–1999) was a New Zealand polio survivor, writer and clinical psychologist. Early life and education Opie was born in New Plymouth on 27 June 1924, and lived as a child in Mōkau, north Taranaki. She was educated at New Plymouth Girls' High School and then qualified in teaching at Auckland Training College and in speech therapy at Christchurch Training College. She worked as a speech therapist for Whāngārei education department, before setting sail for England in 1947, planning to stay two years to teach and to observe speech therapy clinics. Polio and later life Opie contracted polio during the voyage, falling ill after two days in London. She was admitted to St Mary's Hospital and spent ten weeks in an iron lung. She then spent over a year in a plaster cast, and a total of two years in the hospital. Gregg Hughes, better known by his air name Opie, is an American radio personality and podcast host best known as the former co-host of the ''Opie and Anthony'' radio show that aired from 1995 to 2014 with Anthony Cumia and comedian Jim Norton. From 2014 to 2016, Hughes and Norton stayed at SiriusXM as co-hosts of ''Opie with Jim Norton''.
