Operation Walker was a security operation conducted during the Vietnam War by the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (United States), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 173rd Airborne Brigade in Bình Định Province, South Vietnam from 17 March 1968 to 31 January 1969. Background Following the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s withdrawal from Operation MacArthur, the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment was assigned to defend Camp Radcliff, the Brigade’s main base at An Khê in western Bình Định Province and National Route 19 (Vietnam), Route 19 that linked Pleiku with the coastal logistics hub at Qui Nhơn. Rome Plow
Rome plows were large, specially modified armored bulldozers used in South Vietnam by the United States military during the Vietnam War. Background The plows took their name from the city of Rome, Georgia, where they were made by the Rome Plow Company (now located in Cedartown, Georgia). The plow tractors were equipped with a very sharp "stinger blade" which weighed more than two tons and was able to cut down trees, which were then burned. When fully equipped, a Rome plow tractor weighed without the rome plow kit. Rome plows were mounted on Caterpillar D7E bulldozers of the 59th, 60th, 501st, 538th, 687th, and 984th Engineer Companies (Land Clearing). The Douglas AC-47 Spooky (also nicknamed "Puff, the Magic Dragon") was the first in a series of fixed-wing gunships developed by the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. It was designed to provide more firepower than light and medium ground-attack aircraft in certain situations when ground forces called for close air support. Design and development The AC-47 was a United States Air Force (USAF) C-47, (the military version of the DC-3) that had been modified by mounting three 7.62 mm General Electric miniguns to fire through two rear window openings and the side cargo door, all on the left (pilot's) side of the aircraft, to provide close air support for ground troops. The 1st Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army regiment that has its antecedents in the early 19th century in the formation of the United States Regiment of Dragoons. To this day, the unit's special designation is "First Regiment of Dragoons".
