Operation Paul Revere
Operation Paul Revere was a 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division operation that took place west of Pleiku, lasting from 10 May to 1 August 1966. Prelude On 10 May 1966 following sightings of large People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces west of Đức Cơ and Plei Me Camps, the 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division was deployed to Landing Zone Oasis to sweep the area to the southwest. After a week of fruitless searching the Brigade changed its focus to the west to the Chu Pong Massif. Operation On the morning of 24 May a CIDG patrol was ambushed by an estimated two battalions of PAVN 10 kilometres southwest of Plei Djereng Camp. The patrol was reinforced by a further two CIDG Companies and the fighting continued throughout the day with both sides digging in for the night. Plei Djereng Camp
Plei Djereng Camp (also known as Plei Djereng Special Forces Camp or Le Minh Camp) is a former U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base northwest of Pleiku in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. History A base was first established in December 1964 by the 5th Special Forces Group Detachment A-214 to monitor communist infiltration along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The camp was located 41 km northwest of Pleiku and near to the Cambodian border. Special Forces Detachment A-214 (later redesignated A-251) took over the camp in August 1965. On 14 October 1966 the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) attacked reconnaissance patrols out of Plei Djereng. On 21 October U.S. forces launched Operation Paul Revere IV deploying the 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division north of the camp and the 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division south of the camp. 35th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 35th Infantry Regiment ("Cacti") was created on 1 July 1916 at Douglas, Arizona from elements of the 11th, 18th and 22nd Infantry Regiments. The 35th served on the Mexico–US border during the First World War and was stationed at Nogales, Arizona in 1918. It fought a border skirmish on 27 August 1918 during the Battle of Ambos Nogales. In World War II, Korea, and Vietnam it served as part of the 25th Infantry (Tropic Lightning) Division.
