Operation Martyr's Right
Operation Martyr's Right was a military operation conducted by the Egyptian Armed Forces in cooperation with the Egyptian National Police officers, aimed at rooting out and killing jihadist militants. The operation was officially launched on 7 September 2015. It is considered to be the largest military action in the Sinai Peninsula in months. The operation targets sites in all towns in northern area of the peninsula. A part of the larger background of an international campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, over two hundred militants tied to the terrorist group have been reported dead. Sinai Insurgency
The Sinai insurgency is an ongoing insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, that was commenced by Islamist militants against Egyptian security forces, which have also included attacks on civilians. The insurgency began during the Egyptian Crisis, during which the longtime Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in the Egyptian revolution of 2011. The Sinai insurgency initially consisted of militants, largely composed of local Bedouin tribesmen, who exploited the chaotic situation in Egypt and weakened central authority to launch a series of attacks on government forces in Sinai, later on, militants of other nationalities also joined extremist groups in Sinai like: Palestinians, Syrians, Iraqis and Libyans. In response to rapid territorial gains made by the so-called Islamic State during the first half of 2014, and its universally condemned executions, reported human rights abuses and the fear of further spillovers of the Syrian Civil War, many states began to intervene against it in both the Syrian Civil War and the War in Iraq. Muhammad Ahmad ’Ali al-Isawi, known as Abu Osama al-Masri ( ar, أبو أسامة المصري) (1972/1973-June 2018) was an Egyptian jihadist and leader of the Islamic State branch in the Sinai Peninsula, known as Wilayat Sinai. Mahmoud Tawfik ( ar, محمود توفيق; born 1961) is an Egyptian politician and police officer. He serves as the Egyptian Minister of Interior. Career Tawfik joined the Egyptian police and graduated from the Police Academy in 1982. Following his graduation, Tawfik worked for various Egyptian security agencies under the control of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior.
