Operation Mad Ball
''Operation Mad Ball'' is a 1957 military comedy from Columbia Pictures, produced by Jed Harris, directed by Richard Quine, that stars Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs, Kathryn Grant, Arthur O'Connell, and Mickey Rooney. The screenplay is by Blake Edwards, Jed Harris, and Arthur Carter, based on an unproduced play by Carter. Plot Following World War II in 1945, at a U.S. Army hospital unit in France, Pvt. Hogan does not believe that a blue-stocking can ever be good-looking. Catching first sight of new arrival nurse Lt. Betty Bixby convinces him otherwise. He picks up her dropped cigarette lighter after putting aside his M-1 rifle. He is seen by security officer Capt. Paul Locke, who admonishes him for doing so while Hogan is standing night guard duty. Locke confines him to quarters preliminary to a court martial. The colonel in charge of the hospital, however, would prefer to keep everything "in the family" and avoid a court martial. Richard Quine
Richard Quine (November 12, 1920June 10, 1989) was an American director, actor, and singer. He began acting as a child in radio, vaudeville, and stage productions before being signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in his early twenties. When his acting career began to wane after World War II, Quine began working as a film director. He later moved into producing and directing television. Quine's films as director include ''Bell, Book and Candle'' (1958), ''The World of Suzie Wong'' (1960), ''Paris When It Sizzles'' (1964), ''How to Murder Your Wife'' (1965), and ''The Prisoner of Zenda'' (1979). Richard Allen York (September 4, 1928 – February 20, 1992) was an American radio, stage, film, and television actor. He was the first actor to play Darrin Stephens on the ABC fantasy sitcom ''Bewitched''. He played teacher Bertram Cates in the film '' Inherit the Wind'' (1960). Betsy Jones-Moreland (died May 1, 2006) was an American actress. Early life Jones-Moreland worked in secretarial jobs before she became an entertainer. Career Jones-Moreland acted on stage, including as a member of the newly formed Valley Playhouse in Woodland Hills, California, in 1958 and the Players Ring Theater in Los Angeles in 1960. Richard DeHart Crockett (February 27, 1915 – January 25, 1979) was an American television and film actor, stunt performer, stunt coordinator, producer, and director, best known for his work with director Blake Edwards. Sheridan Comerate (April 11, 1928 – April 16, 1973) was an American actor famous for his film roles in '' 3:10 to Yuma'' and '' Live Fast, Die Young''. In television, some memorable appearances came in episodes in series like ''Twilight Zone'' (as gas station attendant in "Walking Distance"), and in "The Millionaire" where Comerate portrays a man who survives horrific plane crash. In life, he died in a plane crash near Brick Township, New Jersey, in 1973 at the age of 45.
