Operation Georgia
Operation Georgia was a U.S. Marine Corps security operation around the An Hoa Industrial Complex in western Quảng Nam province, lasting from 21 April to 10 May 1966. Prelude In mid-April, the 9th Marine Regiment began planning for an operation to provide security for the An Hoa Industrial Complex in western Quảng Nam province. Operational orders were completed on 14 April and the mission was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines. On 20 April the 3/9 Marines established a forward headquarters at An Hoa airstrip deploying Company L and Battery F, 12th Marine Regiment there. Thu Bồn River
The Thu Bồn River ( vi, Sông Thu Bồn) is a river in central Vietnam, located in Quảng Nam Province. From its source near the border of Quảng Nam and Quảng Ngãi provinces, it flows northwest through Bắc Trà My, Phú Ninh, Hiệp Đức and Quế Sơn districts; turning northeast, it forms the border between Đại Lộc district and Duy Xuyên district, before emptying into the South China Sea at Hội An. 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion
The 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion (3rd Recon) conducts amphibious and ground reconnaissance in support of the 3rd Marine Division and Marine Forces Pacific (MarForPac), operating in the commander's areas of influence. The South Vietnamese Popular Force ( vi, nghĩa quân, PF) (originally the Self-Defense Corps) was a part-time local militia of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) during the Vietnam War. The South Vietnamese Popular Force mainly protected homes and villages in South Vietnam from attacks by the Viet Cong (VC) and later the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN). The LVTP-5 (landing vehicle, tracked, personnel 5) is a family of amphibious armored fighting vehicles used by the Philippine Marine Corps and, formerly, the United States Marine Corps. The 12th Marine Regiment is an artillery regiment of the United States Marine Corps based at Camp Smedley Butler, Okinawa, Japan. An Hòa Combat Base (also known as Đức Dục) is a former U.S. Marine Corps and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base west of Hội An in Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. History The base was located approximately 28 km west of Hội An and 4 km west northwest of the Mỹ Sơn temple complex, near to the Tỉnh Yên River ( Thu Bồn River) and the An Hòa industrial complex. An Hòa was located southeast of a major Vietcong (VC)/People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) base area known as the Arizona Territory across the Vu Gia River.
