OpenCell
OpenCell is a laboratory in London. Laboratories OpenCell is primarily used for work related to biochemical and biomolecular activities such as DNA sequencing. It opened to the public in June 2018. The space uses shipping containers to house biotechnology laboratories. The laboratories contain biotechnology equipment including real-time PCR instruments, Plate reader Plate readers, also known as microplate readers or microplate photometers, are instruments which are used to detect biological, chemical or physical events of samples in microtiter plates. They are widely used in research, drug discovery, bioas ..., Opentrons liquid handling robots, flow hoods, non-ducted fume cupboards, -80, -20 and 4C storage, incubators (static/shaking), centrifuges (1ml-50ml refrigerated), and bench space COVID-19 testing In August 2020, a shipping container laboratory for COVID-19 diagnostics was delivered to the Bailiwick of Jersey. The laboratory began processing tests on Tuesday, Sep ...

DNA Sequencing
DNA sequencing is the process of determining the nucleic acid sequence – the order of nucleotides in DNA. It includes any method or technology that is used to determine the order of the four bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. The advent of rapid DNA sequencing methods has greatly accelerated biological and medical research and discovery. Knowledge of DNA sequences has become indispensable for basic biological research, DNA Genographic Projects and in numerous applied fields such as medical diagnosis, biotechnology, forensic biology, virology and biological systematics. Comparing healthy and mutated DNA sequences can diagnose different diseases including various cancers, characterize antibody repertoire, and can be used to guide patient treatment. Having a quick way to sequence DNA allows for faster and more individualized medical care to be administered, and for more organisms to be identified and cataloged. The rapid speed of sequencing attained with modern D ...

Quantitative PCR Instrument
A quantitative PCR instrument is a machine that amplifies and detects DNA. It combines the functions of a thermal cycler and a fluorimeter, enabling the process of quantitative PCR. The first quantitative PCR machine was described in 1993, and two commercial models became available in 1996. By 2009, eighteen different models were offered by seven different manufacturers. Prices range from about 4,300 USD to 150,000 USD Principal performance dimensions of quantitative PCR instruments are thermal control, fluorimetry and sample throughput. Thermal control Efficient performance of quantitative PCR requires rapid, precise, thermal control. 30 cycles of PCR have been demonstrated in less than 10 minutes. Rapid cycling provides several benefits, including, reduced time to result, increased system throughput and improved reaction specificity. In practice however, engineering trade-offs between ease of use, temperature uniformity, and speed, mean that reaction times are typically more t ...

Plate Readers
Plate readers, also known as microplate readers or microplate photometers, are instruments which are used to detect biological, chemical or physical events of samples in microtiter plates. They are widely used in research, drug discovery, bioassay validation, quality control and manufacturing processes in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry and academic organizations. Sample reactions can be assayed in 1-1536 well format microtiter plates. The most common microplate format used in academic research laboratories or clinical diagnostic laboratories is 96-well (8 by 12 matrix) with a typical reaction volume between 100 and 200 µL per well. Higher density microplates (384- or 1536-well microplates) are typically used for screening applications, when throughput (number of samples per day processed) and assay cost per sample become critical parameters, with a typical assay volume between 5 and 50 µL per well. Common detection modes for microplate assays are absorbance, fl ...

Opentrons
Opentrons is an open source liquid handling robot and can be used by life scientists to manipulate small volumes of liquids for the purpose of undertaking biochemical reactions. The instrument is used primarily by researchers and scientists interested in DIY biology but is increasingly being used by other biologists. They are produced by Opentrons Labworks. Products * OT-1: The OpenTrons OT-1 was the result of a crowd funding campaign on the Kickstarter platform and was released in 2015 for $2,000. The release of the OT-1 marked the first commercial open source liquid handling robot in the life science industry. * OT-2: The OpenTrons OT-2 was released in 2018 and has seen utilization as one of the open source tools that researchers are leveraging in the fight against COVID-19 Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first known case was COVID-19 pandemic in Hubei ...

Public Laboratories
In public relations and communication science, publics are groups of individual people, and the public (a.k.a. the general public) is the totality of such groupings. This is a different concept to the sociology, sociological concept of the ''Öffentlichkeit'' or public sphere. The concept of a public has also been defined in political science, psychology, marketing, and advertising. In public relations and communication science, it is one of the more ambiguous concepts in the field. Although it has definitions in the theory of the field that have been formulated from the early 20th century onwards, and suffered more recent years from being blurred, as a result of conflation of the idea of a public with the notions of audience, market segment, community, constituency, and stakeholder. Etymology and definitions The name "public" originates with the Latin ''wikt:publicus#Latin, publicus'' (also ''wikt:poplicus#Latin, poplicus''), from ''wikt:populus#Latin, populus'', to the Engli ...

Shipping Containers
A shipping container is a container with strength suitable to withstand shipment, storage, and handling. Shipping containers range from large reusable steel boxes used for intermodal shipments to the ubiquitous corrugated boxes. In the context of international shipping trade, "container" or "shipping container" is virtually synonymous with " intermodal freight container" (sometimes informally called a "sea can"), a container designed to be moved from one mode of transport to another without unloading and reloading. Intermodal freight containers Freight containers are a reusable transport and storage unit for moving products and raw materials between locations or countries. There are about seventeen million intermodal containers in the world, and a large proportion of the world's long-distance freight generated by international trade is transported in shipping containers. In addition, it is estimated that several million of these containers have now been discarded due to t ...
