Oosterweel Link
The Oosterweel Link is a construction project first proposed in 1996, intended to complete the R1 Antwerp Ring Road in Antwerp, Belgium. The firm Antwerp Mobility Management Company (name changed to Lantis in 2019), is the Flemish Government controlled organisation assigned responsibility for the project. The Oosterweel link will connect the Expressweg ( E34) near Blokkersdijk via a toll tunnel (the Oosterweeltunnel) underneath the Scheldt, leading to a dual-layered tunnel under the Albert Canal and connecting with the Antwerp Ring Road at Merksem and Deurne. Characteristics The Flemish Government wishes to improve access to the city of Antwerp as well as to the port, to relieve traffic congestion on the Antwerp Ring Road and to reduce "rat running" commuter traffic in the larger urban area. R1 Ring Road (Belgium)
The R1 is the ring road around the city of Antwerp, Belgium. The ring road is not complete; however, its completion is planned with the long running proposed construction of the Oosterweel Link which would cross the Scheldt river. The existing Scheldt crossing is via the Kennedy Tunnel. The road is largely built on the area of the former Brialmont Fortress around the city of Antwerp, which was constructed between 1859 and 1863. In the course of planning the procurement of the construction works, the Flemish authorities raised several queries with the European Commission, intending to ensure that their plans did not conflict with EU public procurement law. Ringland (organisation)
Ringland (officially ''Ringgenootschap vzw'') is a non-governmental organization in Antwerp, Belgium, that is demanding that the authorities install a roof covering over the entire ring road around Antwerp. History After comparison of different options in the environmental effects report, in the beginning of 2014 the Flemish Government chose the BAM track to complete the ring road, in combination with a tunnel under the Albert Canal. That tunnel was a new element. Ringland came up with more demands and insisted on a roof on the entire Ring. Ringland claims this would lead to less pollution and damage by (ultra)fine particles, and less noise disturbance, hence enhancing the liveability of the environment. Lange Wapper
Lange Wapper is a Flemish folkloric character. He is a legendary giant and trickster whose folk tales were told especially in the city of Antwerp and its neighbouring towns, but similar tales are also prominent in other Flemish cities. Legend The legend started in the 16th century in Wilrijk. A farmer found an enormous garden parsley and a red cabbage in his bed. When he touched the vegetables, they turned into a cute baby. As he was unable to take care for the child it was adopted by a family living in Antwerp. Many years later the boy helped persons in need. One day he saved an old woman who was thrown into river Scheldt by a youth gang. The old woman thanked the man by giving him some gifts such as the ability to shapeshift and to make himself so tall he could move from one town to another with a single giant leap. Christian Leysen (born 1954) is a Belgian businessman, and Chairman of the International Advisory board of Antwerp Management School, who developed several Belgian ventures to large international companies. Biography Born in Wilrijk as son of André Leysen, Leysen obtained a Commercial engineer - Master's degree in Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1976.
