Onondaga Hill, New York
Onondaga Hill is a hamlet in the Town of Onondaga in Onondaga County, New York, United States, southwest of the city of Syracuse. It is located on the Seneca Turnpike at the intersection of New York State Route 173 and New York State Route 175. Onondaga Hill was the location of the first Onondaga county courthouse, built in 1805 and in use as a school after the county seat moved to Syracuse in 1830. Until 2005, the hamlet was the location of Onondaga's town hall. The Onondaga Free Library and the Town of Onondaga Historical Society are in Onondaga Hill. Community General Hospital and Van Duyn Home and Hospital are located on the eastern edge of the hamlet, near the Syracuse city line. The main campus of Onondaga Community College lies on the hamlet's western edge. Onondaga Hill is populated mainly of middle-class families. Seneca Turnpike
The Seneca Road Company was formed to improve the main road running west from Utica, New York, the Genesee Road, from Utica to Canandaigua and operate it as a toll road or turnpike. The road was originally laid out in 1794 from Baggs Square in downtown Utica (then Old Fort Schuyler) at the ford of the Mohawk River and followed the Indian trail past Syracuse to Canandaigua. Some accounts say it went to Geneva and Avon originally. There was no City of Syracuse then. The road became known as the Seneca Turnpike, which was long and, at the time, the longest toll road in the state. On April 1, 1800, the privately held Seneca Road Company received a state charter with a capitalization of $110,000. A hamlet is a human settlement that is smaller than a town or village. Its size relative to a parish can depend on the administration and region. A hamlet may be considered to be a smaller settlement or subdivision or satellite entity to a larger settlement. The word and concept of a hamlet has roots in the Anglo-Norman settlement of England, where the old French ' came to apply to small human settlements. Onondaga Community College
Onondaga Community College (OCC) is a public community college that serves Onondaga County, New York, at two campuses. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. History The college was founded in 1961 and began instruction in September 1962 in the rehabilitated L.C. Smith factory (the now demolished ''Midtown Plaza'') in downtown Syracuse. With an initial enrollment of approx. 500 students, The original graduating class of 1964 numbered 160. New York State Route 175
New York State Route 175 (NY 175) is an east–west state highway located entirely within Onondaga County, New York, in the United States. The route begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) east of the village of Skaneateles and passes through the village of Marcellus before ending at a junction with US 11 in Syracuse. The highway was designated in the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. The section of NY 175 from the town of Marcellus to the end of the NY 173 concurrency is part of the Seneca Turnpike, which was established in 1800 and dissolved in 1852. This portion of the Seneca Turnpike was instrumental in the development of the villages of Skaneateles and Marcellus.
