Onondaga People
The Onondaga people (Onondaga: , ''Hill Place people'') are one of the original five constituent nations of the Iroquois (''Haudenosaunee'') Confederacy in northeast North America. Their traditional homeland is in and around present-day Onondaga County, New York, south of Lake Ontario. They are known as ''Gana’dagwëni:io’geh'' to the other Iroquois tribes. Being centrally located, they are considered the "Keepers of the Fire" (''’'' in Tuscarora) in the figurative longhouse that shelters the Five Nations. The Cayuga and Seneca have territory to their west and the Oneida and Mohawk to their east. For this reason, the League of the Iroquois historically met at the Iroquois government's capital at Onondaga, as the traditional chiefs do today. Onondaga Lake is a lake in Central New York, immediately northwest of and adjacent to Syracuse, New York. HMCS ''Onondaga'' (S73) is an that served in the Royal Canadian Navy and later the Canadian Forces. Onondaga Community College
Onondaga Community College (OCC) is a public community college that serves Onondaga County, New York, at two campuses. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. History The college was founded in 1961 and began instruction in September 1962 in the rehabilitated L.C. Smith factory (the now demolished ''Midtown Plaza'') in downtown Syracuse. With an initial enrollment of approx. 500 students, The original graduating class of 1964 numbered 160. Due to demands for more space and increased enrollment, a new site was chosen on Onondaga Hill where the college is situated now. Onondaga Park
Onondaga Park is an park in the city of Syracuse, New York. Man-made Hiawatha Lake is located within the park, which is situated in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood on the city's south side. Portions of the park were designed by famed urban planner George Kessler in the early 20th century. The park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Onondaga Lake Park is an over 8-mile (12.8 km) linear greenway located on the shores of Onondaga Lake in Onondaga County, New York. The park is shared between the towns of Salina and Geddes and the city of Syracuse and is home to the Salt Museum, East Shore Recreation Trail and West Shore Trail. History East Shore Recreation Trail Over two and one-half miles long and twenty feet wide, this paved trail is used for in-line skating and bicycling. During the peak season of April to October, pedestrian use is allowed only if it does not impede wheeled users and stay within three feet of the shoulder and with no more than two abreast. Onondaga Creek
Onondaga Creek is a major tributary of Onondaga Lake which is located in Onondaga County, New York. The headwaters of the creek originate south of the city of Syracuse near the hamlet of Vesper, in the town of Tully, New York. The creek flows north through the Tully Valley and through the city of Syracuse where it empties into Onondaga Lake. The major tributaries of Onondaga Creek are the West Branch of Onondaga Creek, Hemlock Creek and Rattlesnake Gulf. History In the late 1940s, the Army Corp. of Engineers built a flood control dam and reservoir within the Onondaga Nation Reservation for the purpose of regulating the peak flow that reaches the city of Syracuse. Onondaga (village)
Onondaga was a village that served as the capital of the Iroquois League and the primary settlement of the Onondaga nation. It was the meeting place of the Iroquois Grand Council. The clan mothers named the men representing the clans at village and tribal councils and appointed the 49 sachems who met here periodically as the ruling council for the confederated Five Nations.
