Onepoto Bridge
Onepoto Bridge is a long pedestrian and cyclist bridge crossing the tidal stream outlet of the Onepoto volcanic crater in Northcote, Auckland. The bridge became necessary after widening of Onewa Road towards State Highway 1 made the existing bridge too narrow to carry footpaths. After deciding to build a new bridge, North Shore City Council resolved to construct an iconic structure that would create "architecture integrated into the landscape". This resulted in the bridge structure being encased with wooden curved 'ribs' that have been described as a whale skeleton, a wave or a half-finished sailing ship. Onepoto Volcanic Crater
Onepoto is the name of a volcanic explosion crater (or maar) on the North Shore in Auckland, New Zealand. It is a part of the Auckland volcanic field. History Located near the approaches to the Auckland Harbour Bridge, it was created by a series of eruptions approximately 185,000 years ago. The crater first became a freshwater lake, and later became a tidal lagoon when sea level rose to the present level 7,000 years ago after the last ice age. Northcote, Auckland
Northcote ( ) is a suburb of Auckland in northern New Zealand. It is situated on the North Shore, on the northern shores of Waitematā Harbour, four km northwest of Auckland CBD. The suburb includes the peninsula of Northcote Point and the northern approaches to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Northcote Central is to the north of Northcote. History Northcote Point, known as Tōtaratahi ("single Totara tree"), was the location of Te Onewa Pā, a fortified pā supporting Tāmaki Māori in the area, close to kūmara gardens, shellfish and the Waitemata Harbour shark fishery, which were hunted for during summers.
