''One on One'' is a 1979 collaboration album by jazz keyboardist Bob James and guitarist Earl Klugh that won the Grammy Award for ''Best Pop Instrumental Performance'' in 1981. In 1982 the album was certified gold in the United States. Track listing Overview The album was recorded at Mediasound, Sound Palace, and SoundMixers Studios in New York City in 1979. Tape mastering took place at CBS Recording Studio in New York. The album was released in late 1979 by Tappan Zee, the label owned by Bob James, promoted and distributed by Columbia in the US and CBS in the UK. "Jazz Jam" was a throwaway track assembled by James for the engineers to balance their recording levels. "Jazz Jam" remained unreleased until Bob James found it while re-releasing the album for the Japanese market. Bob James (musician)
Robert McElhiney James (born December 25, 1939) is an American jazz keyboardist, arranger, and record producer. He founded the band Fourplay and wrote "Angela", the theme song for the TV show ''Taxi.'' According to VICE (magazine), music from his first seven albums has often been sampled and believed to have contributed to the formation of hip hop. Among his most well known recordings are "Nautilus", "Westchester Lady", "Tappan Zee", and his version of "Take Me to The Mardi Gras". Early life and family James was born on Christmas Day of 1939 in Marshall, Missouri, United States. He started playing the piano at age four. His first piano teacher, Sister Mary Elizabeth, who taught at Mercy Academy, discovered that he had perfect pitch. At age seven, James began to study with R. T. Harvey Mason
Harvey William Mason (born February 22, 1947) is an American jazz drummer, record producer, and member of the band Fourplay. Mason, who attended Berklee in the 1960s, received an Honorary Doctorate at Berklee's 2015 Commencement Ceremony for his achievement and influence in music and for his enduring contributions to American and international culture. Life and career Mason was born and grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States, and attended Atlantic City High School. He began playing drums at the age of four with the support of his father, a drummer in the army band. Emanuel Vardi (21 April 1915 – 29 January 2011), an American Viola, violist, was considered to have been one of the great viola players of the 20th century. Early life Emanuel Vardi was born April 21, 1915 in Jerusalem. His mother, Anna Joffa Vardi, had a piano studio with many students and started Emanuel on piano at about age 3. His father, Joseph Vardi had a violin studio and also started his son out on his instrument at about the age of 3. The family came to the United States in 1920 via Paris, France, aboard a ship called "the Asia" to escape the pogroms in the Middle East. He continued studying both piano and violin until about age 7, when he forwent piano to focus on violin. He played Mozart's Fantasy in D-minor at a recital at age 9. Phil Bodner
Philip L. Bodner (June 13, 1917 – February 24, 2008) was an American jazz clarinetist and studio musician who also played flute, oboe, saxophone, and English horn. Career A native of Waterbury, Connecticut, Bodner worked as a studio musician in the 1940s and 1950s in New York City. He recorded with Benny Goodman in 1958 and with Miles Davis and Gil Evans in 1958. In the 1960s he played with Oliver Nelson and J.J. Johnson, and organized The Brass Ring, a group modeled after Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. The Brass Ring released nine albums between 1966 and 1972. Associations in the 1970s included Oscar Peterson, Yusef Lateef, Peanuts Hucko, Wild Bill Davison, and Ralph Sutton. Bodner played the signature piccolo part on the disco hit " The Hustle" by Van McCoy. James Buffington
James Lawrence Buffington (born May 15, 1922, Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania; died July 20, 1981, Englewood, New Jersey) was an American jazz, studio, and classical hornist. Buffington was a busy studio and jazz player on the French horn. He was an autodidact as a child, though his father played piano and trumpet. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music and began playing in New York City in the 1950s, with Oscar Pettiford among others. He played with Mel Powell in 1954 and Teddy Charles in 1956. He is perhaps best known for his work with Miles Davis on some of his Gil Evans sessions for Columbia Records.
