"One in Ten" is a song by British reggae band UB40, released in July 1981 as a single from their second album ''Present Arms (album), Present Arms''. It became the band's fourth top-ten hit, peaking at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Background and release The song title refers to the approximately 10% of the local workforce claiming Unemployment benefit#United Kingdom, unemployment benefit in the band's home region of West Midlands (region), West Midlands in the summer of 1981 when the song was recorded and released. It is a protest again the then-Prime minister, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at a time when there was rising unemployment and inequality in the UK. UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success. They have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984 were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group. UB40 have sold over 70 million records worldwide. The ethnic make-up of the band's original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish, and Yemeni parentage. The Media Research Information Bureau (MRIB) was a music chart research company that operated in the United Kingdom from 1981 to 2008. It was best known for compiling the chart data for ''The Network Chart Show'' which was broadcast by many TV and radio shows, as well as being published in many music newspapers and magazines. MRIB also compiled other genre charts for the United Kingdom. History Foundation MRIB was founded in 1981, by Luke Crampton, and Dafydd Rees. In December 1984, data from MRIB showed that pirate radio station Laser 558 had an audience of nearly five million people. Beats International were a British dance music band and hip-hop collective, formed in the late 1980s by Norman Cook (later in his career known as Fatboy Slim) based in Brighton, East Sussex, England, after his departure from the Housemartins. A loose confederation of musicians, the line-up also included vocalist Lindy Layton, former North of Cornwallis vocalist Lester Noel, rappers DJ Baptiste (The Crazy MC), MC Wildski and keyboardist Andy Boucher. Unusually, the band's live line-up also incorporated a graffiti artist, REQ, who painted designs on a backdrop while the musicians played.
