One Caribbean Media
One Caribbean Media Ltd (OCM) is a vertically integrated holding company based in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The new company was founded in December 2005, following the merger of the Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Nation Corporation of Barbados. The merger of the respective conglomerates was pursued after both companies held a sizable financial stake in each other for a number of years. The company still currently holds a large financial stake in both the ''Jamaica Observer'', Jamaica's daily newspaper, as well as Guyana's ''Stabroek News''. The radio programming in Trinidad and Tobago caters to a diverse ethnic demographic. The genesis of radio broadcasting in Trinidad and Tobago began in 1925 with British Rediffiusion via a wired relay network. During World War II, the US Armed Forces Radio Service network – WVDI began broadcasting in May 1943 from Fort Reid, Chaguaramas. At that time, WVDI mainly serviced the armed forces throughout the Caribbean. British Rediffusion now Rediffusion (Trinidad) Limited created the Trinidad Broadcasting Company in 1946 which launched Radio Trinidad 730 AM in 1947. On October 13, 1957, Radio Guardian 610 AM was launched with the state acquiring the station and renaming it the National Broadcasting Service or NBS 610 Action Radio on November 1, 1969. Voice Of Barbados
Voice of Barbados (VOB) was introduced in 1981 as Barbados' second radio station. Originally located at 790 AM, the station was meant to complement the Redifussion service. In the late 1990s Voice of Barbados (VOB) changed to the FM dial, with 790 AM changing format from general to gospel. 790 AM was abandoned when the gospel format was moved to 97.5 FM. Voice of Barbados is now part of the Starcom Network of stations. After One Caribbean Media was unsuccessful at obtaining a fifth radio license in Barbados after already having stations at 92.9, 95.3, 97.5 and 104.1, the company sought to find a way to vacate an existing frequency for the Caribbean Super Station. At that time, the company transmitted its broadcast signal using a cable network system, known as subscription radio. As the only radio station in Barbados until the first wireless radio station 900 AM was started in 1963, subscribers used to pay for the radio on a monthly bases.
