Onalaska is a city in Polk County, Texas, United States. Situated on a peninsula between the main channel and one arm of Lake Livingston, the population was 3,020 at the 2020 census. History Onalaska was struck by a F2 tornado on May 1, 1967. The tornado unroofed a combined store and post office ripped out its rear wall injuring two people. The town was hit by an even stronger EF3 tornado on April 22, 2020. This damaged many homes, killed three people, and injured 33 others. Geography Onalaska is located at (30.807783, –95.106575). Onalaska is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lewis County, Washington, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 621. Onalaska is located along Washington State Route 508. Etymology The name for the community comes from the poem "The Pleasures of Hope" by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. The towns of Onalaska in Washington, Arkansas, Texas, and Wisconsin share a linked history to one another through the lumber industry. History Onalaska was built around the inland mill established by the Carlisle Lumber Company in 1909. At its peak in 1929, company inventory numbered over 20 million board feet of lumber — enough to stretch all the way to the Panama Canal. The company's surviving 225-foot smokestack near Carlisle Lake was built approximately in 1920, and is the last trace of one of the most successful mid-sized sawmills in Washington state. Onalaska is a city in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 18,803 at the 2020 census. It borders the larger La Crosse, Wisconsin, and is a part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Area. Onalaska is built on a slightly elevated ridge above the Black River. Natural areas include both river bottom land and high, heavily wooded, scenic Hill, bluffs. A man-made reservoir at the city's western edge is known as Lake Onalaska. The CDP of Brice Prairie is located in the western part of the Town of Onalaska. The unincorporated community of Midway is also located in the town. The city is in the Aleutians West Census Area, a regional component of the Unorganized Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. Unalaska is located on Unalaska Island and neighboring Amaknak Island in the Aleutian Islands off mainland Alaska.
