On The Air Live With Captain Midnight
''On the Air Live with Captain Midnight'' is a 1979 American comedy-drama, comedy-drama film directed by Beverly Sebastian and Ferd Sebastian with Tracy Sebastian as Marvin Ziegler, also known as Captain Midnight (not to be confused with the Captain Midnight serial character from the 1930s and 1940s), who runs his own pirate radio station and becomes an underground cult hit. The film was released in 1979 although it was filmed in 1977. The film is about a teenager who has a mobile broadcast transmitter in his van that allows him to take over the airwaves as a renegade disc jockey. Veteran Los Angeles DJ Jim Ladd co-stars in the film as a disc jockey. In popular culture Drawing upon the pirate radio themes in the film, the protagonist's name was later used in the 1986 Captain Midnight (HBO), Captain Midnight pirate satellite broadcast on HBO protesting scrambling equipment and high fees. Beverly Sebastian
Beverly Sebastian is an American film director, writer, and cinematographer whose independent films in the 1970s and 1980s were predominantly Exploitation film, exploitation pictures similar to the work of Roger Corman and other directors in the 1960s at independent studios like American International Pictures. Her husband, Ferd Sebastian, often co-directed with her. After directing ''Running Cool'' in 1993, she and her husband retired to Florida. As of 2012, Sebastian runs the ''Greyhound Foundation'' which saves Greyhound dogs retired from racing, gives them medical assistance and trains them with prisoners. On April 27, 1986, American electrical engineer and business owner John R. MacDougall (using the pseudonym "Captain Midnight") jammed the Home Box Office (HBO) satellite signal on Galaxy 1 during a showing of the film ''The Falcon and the Snowman''. The message, broadcast for four and a half minutes, was seen by the eastern half of the United States (accounting for more than half of HBO's 14.6 million subscribers at the time) protesting HBO's rates for satellite dish owners, which he considered too expensive. Vansploitation is a term used for a genre of American independent films from the 1970s in which vans are a "key element to the plot", and that often feature comedic stories about college-age people. History The short-lived genre emerged in the United States in the early 1970s, exploiting the popularity of vans with young people, was very popular in the mid to late 1970s, and disappeared in the early 1980s. Vansploitation films were originally made mostly for young audiences. Jim Ladd (born January 17, 1948), an American disc jockey, radio producer and writer, is one of the few notable remaining freeform rock DJs in United States commercial radio.
