''On Trial'' (French: ''L'Affaire Maurizius''; Italian: ''Il caso Mauritius'') is a 1954 French-Italian drama film directed by Julien Duvivier and starring Daniel Gélin, Madeleine Robinson and Anton Walbrook. It was based on a 1928 novel by Jakob Wassermann. Synopsis Etzel, the son of the great prosecutor Andergast, wants to look over the file for the Maurizius case, in which the accused was condemned on the basis of suppositions. This was the case which allowed his father, 18 years earlier, to get a head start in his career, but Etzel has some doubts. Julien Duvivier
Julien Duvivier (; 8 October 1896 – 29 October 1967) was a French film director and screenwriter. He was prominent in French cinema in the years 1930–1960. Amongst his most original films, chiefly notable are ''La Bandera (film), La Bandera'', ''Pépé le Moko'', ''Little World of Don Camillo'', ''Panic (1946 film), Panic (Panique)'', ''Voici le temps des assassins'' and '':fr:Marianne de ma jeunesse, Marianne de ma jeunesse''. Daniel Mendaille (27 November 1885 – 17 May 1963) was a French stage and film actor whose career spanned nearly sixty years. Early life Born Daniel Henri Elie Mendaille in Tours, Indre-et-Loire, Mendaille studied architecture at the Académie royale d'architecture, Institut de France in Paris. At age twenty, he abandoned his studies in architecture and enrolled in the Conservatoire de Paris and studied acting under Paul Mounet. Berthe Bovy (6 January 1887 – 26 February 1977), sometimes known as Betty Bovy, was a Belgian actress who appeared in theatre, films and television programmes for over 60 years. Biography Born Berthe Marguerite Jeanne Bovy, she was the daughter of poet and journalist Théophile Bovy, she was born in Cheratte, now part of the commune of Visé, in the province of Liège. Seemingly interested in acting from an early age, an interest which her father encouraged, she enrolled in the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels following a meeting with Sarah Bernhardt.
