Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Omer Faruk Tekbilek ( tr, Ömer Faruk Tekbilek, born 1951) is a Turkish musician and composer, who plays a wide range of wind, string, percussion and electronic instruments. He has developed a style that builds on traditional Sufi music, but includes inspiration from ambient electronic musicians, most notably Brian Keane. He is best known for his performances with the flute-like ney, but also plays the piccolo-like kaval, and the double-reed zurna. Among stringed instruments, he plays the oud and the bağlama. Personal life Tekbilek's father was a Turk, a religious man who called out the prayers during services in a mosque. His mother was from Egypt, and her love of the music of Riad Al Sunbati was passed to her son, who grew up loving Arabesque music. BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music The BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music was an award given to world music artists between 2002 and 2008, sponsored by BBC Radio 3. Arab Orchestra Of Nazareth
The Arab Orchestra of Nazareth is an Israeli orchestra that plays Arab and Mediterranean music. It was founded in 1991 by conductor and musicologist Suhil Radwan. The Nazareth Orchestra performs in Israel and abroad. It has performed in world music festivals as well as Jazz festivals in New York's Central Park, in many European capitals and in the Pas Festival in Morocco. The orchestra's soloists took part in The Samarkand International Oriental Music Competition, winning third prize; in the Earth Festival in Kenya and have also performed in the successful Israeli film ''The Orchestra Visit''. The orchestra has been part of the Israel Festival, the Carmiel Dance Festival, Jaffa Festival, Oud Festival of Tel Aviv and the Culture Of Peace Festival. Vas was an alternative world musical group which consisted of Persian vocalist Azam Ali and American percussionist Greg Ellis. Vas is frequently compared to the Australian band Dead Can Dance. The band released four full-length albums, and both artists have released a few solo albums and participated in side projects. After the group's last album, ''Feast of Silence'', Ali and Ellis went their own separate ways. Azam Ali was born in Iran and moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1985, where she began studying the dulcimer-like santur under the guidance of Manoochehr Sadeghi. Greg Ellis was born and raised in Los Gatos, California, where he first learned to play the drums at age twelve. Ellis moved to Los Angeles in 1984 and started work as a percussionist.
