Olympia Leisure Centre (2013)
The Olympia Leisure Centre is a swimming pool in Dundee, Scotland. It is currently closed for repair work. History The building was constructed to replace the original Olympia Leisure Centre and is situated on a former car park. Construction began in January 2011 and was due to be completed in September 2012 with a budget of £31.5 million. The main contractor was Balfour Beatty. The pool opened in June 2013. An official opening by Shona Robison was held in September 2013. In September 2021, problems were identified with light fixings, resulting in the closure of the pool in October. Initially the operators stated it would remain closed at least until the following week to allow work to take place. On 10 November the operators stated it would be closed until further notice. Further investigations following the closure found more structural issues. A £4.5 million repair program was launched which is expected to be completed by late 2022. Olympia Leisure Centre (1974)
The Olympia Leisure Centre was a swimming pool in Dundee. History The facility was built on an infilled dock. The facility opened on 15 July 1974. The facility reopened on 28 August 1991 as the Olympia. Operation of the pool transferred from Dundee City Council to Dundee Leisure, a charitable trust, in 2006. The facility closed in 2013, having been replaced with the new Olympia Leisure Centre, and was subsequently demolished. The V&A Dundee was built where the pool stood previously. In 2021, a mural was created by Cobalt Collective outside the V&A depicting the pool. Facilities Following the 1991 refurbishment, the Centre had four pools. Shona McRory Robison (born 26 May 1966) is a Scottish politician serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Housing and Local Government since 2021. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), she has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Dundee City East since 2003 and was an additional member for the North East Scotland region from 1999 to 2003.
