Oltenia Day
Oltenia Day ( ro, Ziua Olteniei) is a public holiday of Romania celebrated every 21 March that commemorates the entry into Bucharest on 21 March 1821 of the Romanian revolutionary Tudor Vladimirescu, who started the Wallachian uprising of 1821 in Oltenia, where he was born. The holiday was promulgated on 13 April 2017 by Law No. 65/2017 by the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and published in the ''Monitorul Oficial'' on the same day. Previously, the project to establish the holiday had been approved by the Senate of Romania on 1 November 2016 and by the Chamber of Deputies of Romania on 21 March 2017. The holiday was first proposed by a group of 27 deputies and senators belonging to different Romanian political parties. According to the law that promulgated the holiday, on Oltenia Day, the central and local authorities and also public cultural institutions are allowed to organize artistic, cultural and scientific events. AGERPRES () is the national news agency of Romania. History The National News Agency "AGERPRES" is the oldest Romanian news agency and the first autonomous agency in Romania. It was established in March 1889 at the initiative of Foreign Minister Petre P. Carp, as the Telegraph Agency of Romania or Romanian Agency with serving as a "fast and accurate service of all general or special interest news". The Telegraph Agency of Romania was suspended from the end of 1916 until the end of World War I. On June 16, 1921, it established the agency Orient-Radio, "caring only for the general interest and that of its subscribers." The Dobruja Day ( ro, Ziua Dobrogei) is a public holiday of Romania celebrated every 14 November that commemorates the incorporation of the region of Northern Dobruja into Romania on 14 November 1878. Background The Principality of Romania gained Northern Dobruja (including the Danube Delta and the Snake Island) in 1878 after defeating the Ottoman Empire together with Russia in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. This territory was given by Russia as an "exchange" or "compensation" for the annexation by the latter of the Romanian region of Southern Bessarabia. Romania later conquered Southern Dobruja as well in 1913 after a war against Bulgaria, then lost the whole Dobruja (except for the Danube Delta) during World War I after the Treaty of Bucharest of 1918, regained it a year later after the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine, and eventually lost Southern Dobruja after the Treaty of Craiova on 7 September 1940, this being followed by a population exchange with Bulgaria. Bukovina Day ( ro, Ziua Bucovinei) is a public holiday of Romania celebrated every 28 November that commemorates the decision of the General Congress of Bukovina to unite the region of Bukovina with the Kingdom of Romania on 28 November 1918. Background Bukovina had belonged to the Romanian principality of Moldavia until 1774, when it was occupied by the Habsburg monarchy. It would not be until 1918 when the region would join Romania, but in 1940, Northern Bukovina, together with Bessarabia, was forcibly ceded to the Soviet Union. Târgu Jiu
Târgu Jiu () is the capital of Gorj County in the Oltenia region of Romania. It is situated on the Southern Sub-Carpathians, on the banks of the river Jiu. Eight localities are administered by the city: Bârsești, Drăgoieni, Iezureni, Polata, Preajba Mare, Romanești, Slobozia and Ursați. The city is noted for the Sculptural Ensemble of Constantin Brâncuși. History The city takes its name from the river Jiu, which runs through it. In antiquity, there was a Dacian village in around the location of today's city surrounded by forests. After the Roman conquests of Oltenia (101-102), military units were stationed around the roads that connected different important routes at the time. During the digging of the Târgu Jiu - Rovinari railroad, mosaics, coins, ceramics and Roman bricks were found in the south-eastern part of the city. Craiova
Craiova (, also , ), is Romania's 6th Cities in Romania, largest city and capital of Dolj County, and situated near the east bank of the river Jiu River, Jiu in central Oltenia. It is a longstanding political center, and is located at approximately equal distances from the Southern Carpathians (north) and the Danube, River Danube (south). Craiova is the chief commercial city west of Bucharest and the most important city of Oltenia. ''Adevărul'' (; meaning "The Truth", formerly spelled ''Adevĕrul'') is a Romanian daily newspaper, based in Bucharest.
