Olmstead Street Historic District
The Olmstead Street Historic District is located along two blocks of that street in Cohoes, New York, Cohoes, New York (state), New York, United States. It is a microcosm of the city's economy at its peak in the mid- to late 19th century, consisting of a former textile, textile mill complex, a filled-in section of the original Erie Canal, and three long blocks of row houses built for the millworkers. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today the row houses still serve as affordable housing. Properties The district is defined as both sides of Olmstead Street between Cayuga and Ontario (also New York State Route 470, NY 470) streets. This area is just to the northwest of the larger Downtown Cohoes Historic District. Cohoes, New York
Cohoes ( ) is an incorporated city located in the northeast corner of Albany County in the U.S. state of New York. It is called the "Spindle City" because of the importance of textile manufacturing to its growth in the 19th century. The city's factories processed cotton from the Deep South. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 16,168. The name Cohoes is believed to be derived from a Mohawk term, ''Ga-ha-oose'', referring to the Cohoes Falls and meaning "Place of the Falling Canoe," an interpretation noted by Horatio Gates Spafford in his 1823 publication "A Gazetteer of the State of New York". Harmony Mills
Harmony Mills, in Cohoes, New York, United States, is an industrial district that is bordered by the Mohawk River and the tracks of the former Troy and Schenectady Railroad (now the Mohawk-Hudson bike trail). It was listed as Harmony Mills Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. A portion of the district encompassing the industrial buildings and some of the housing built for millworkers was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1999. and   The centerpiece building, Harmony Mill No. 3 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It was the largest cotton mill complex in the world when it opened in 1872, and is one of the finest examples of a large-scale textile mill complex outside of New England.
