A film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the film crew and actors in the fulfilment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design and all the creative aspects of filmmaking. It is considered an early example of "true crime" fiction, and contains Hugo's early thoughts on societal injustice which thirty years later he would flesh out in his novel ''Les Misérables''. Charles Carlier, merchant, and editor of the ''Revue de Paris'' considered the work to be of such great educational value that he arranged for copies to be sent to all the deputies in France. Plot Claude Gueux is a poor, hungry inhabitant of Troyes, who has received no education or help from society whatsoever.
