Olivia Rawlinson
Olivia Rawlinson (born 26 October 1992) is a swimmer from the Isle of Man. She competed mainly in the 200 m freestyle and medley events. She represented the Isle of Man at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, becoming their youngest participant ever in the Commonwealth Games. Rawlinson made her international debut in the Shetland 2005 Island Games where she competed in eight races, winning a medal in every race. Rawlinson competed in the 2007 Island Games where she performed at an extremely high level, winning eight medals, three silver and five bronze. This was followed by four golds and three silver in the 2009 Island Games The XIII Island Games were held in Åland, Finland, June 27-July 4, 2009. Medley Swimming
Medley is a combination of four different swimming styles—backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle—into one race. This race is either swum by one swimmer as individual medley (IM) or by four swimmers as a medley relay. Individual medley Individual medley consists of a single swimmer swimming equal distances of four different strokes within one race. Stroke order Individual medley consists of four strokes. These four strokes go in an order by Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and finally Freestyle. The swimmer will swim one quarter of the race in each style, in a certain order. Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. Island Games
The Island Games (currently known as the NatWest International Island Games for sponsorship reasons) are biennial international multi-sports events organised by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). Competitor teams each represent different island communities (with one team from the peninsula of Gibraltar) which are IIGA members. Currently all competitor teams represent non-sovereign territories of European nations—some within European waters and some further overseas. The most recent edition was the 2019, which took place in Gibraltar with around 2,000 competitors from 22 islands or island groups participating in 14 sports. Isle Of Man At The 2006 Commonwealth Games
The Isle of Man was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a 36-member strong contingent, comprising 27 sportsmen and women and 9 officials. Amongst their number was the Commonwealth Games' youngest ever competitor, Olivia Rawlinson, a swimmer aged 13. The team captain was Dane Harrop, while the flag bearer was Harry Creevy, a rifle shooter. The Melbourne Cricket Ground was decorated with creatures to represent the participating countries; the Isle of Man's creature is a basking shark, owing to the high number of sightings of the species in Manx waters. At the 2006 Games, the Isle of Man finished in joint-nineteenth place, winning two medals, including a gold, won by Mark Cavendish. This brought the Isle of Man's total medals won to nine since it first took part in Cardiff in 1958.
