Oliver Stanhope
Oliver "Ollie" Stanhope (born 30 May 1998) is a British Paralympic rower who competes in the coxed four in international level events. He is the son of former rower Richard Stanhope. He won a gold medal in the mixed cox four at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. The 2022 New Year Honours are appointments by some of the 15 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries. Richard Stanhope
Richard Courtney Stanhope (born 27 April 1957) in Blackpool, Lancashire, England is a male retired British rower. Rowing career Stanhope competed in four Olympic Games; the 1980 Summer Olympics, 1984 Summer Olympics, 1988 Summer Olympics and 1992 Summer Olympics. At the 1980 Olympics he was a crew member of the British boat which won the silver medal in the 1980 Olympic eights event. Four years later he and his partner John Beattie finished twelfth in the 1984 coxless pairs competition and at the 1988 Games he finished fourth with the British boat in the men's eight contest. His final Olympic appearance was in 1992 when he was part of the British boat which finished seventh in the coxless four event at the Barcelona Games. Coxed Four
A coxed four, also known as a 4+, is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for four persons who propel the boat with sweep oars and is steered by a coxswain. The crew consists of four rowers, each having one oar, and a cox. There are two rowers on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and two on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). The cox steers the boat using a rudder and may be seated at the stern of the boat where there is a view of the crew or in the bow (known as a bowloader). With a bowloader, amplification is needed to communicate with the crew which is sitting behind, but the cox has a better view of the course and the weight distribution may help the boat go faster. Pararowing (or adaptive rowing) is a category of rowing race for those with physical, visual or intellectual disabilities. History In 1913, rowing for individuals with disabilities was initiated by headmaster George Clifford Brown at Worcester College for the Blind in Great Britain.
