Oliver Smith (cricketer)
Oliver Charles Kennedy Smith (born 29 October 1967) is a former English cricketer. Smith was a left-handed batsman who bowled right-arm off break. He was born in Meriden, Warwickshire. Smith made 3 Youth Test appearances for England Young Cricketers against Sri Lanka Young Cricketers in 1987, with some success, scoring a single century and half century. Later in 1987, he made his only first-class appearance for Gloucestershire against a Rest of the World XI. In this match, he was dismissed by Maninder Singh for a single in Gloucestershire's first-innings, while in their second-innings he was dismissed by John Bracewell for 14 runs. He made no further appearances for Gloucestershire, following spells in the Second XI, he formally left the county at the end of the 1990 season. Oliver is the son of novelist and playwright A. C. H. Meriden, West Midlands
Meriden is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, West Midlands, England. Historically, it is part of Warwickshire and lies between the cities of Birmingham and Coventry. It is located close to the Warwickshire border within a green belt of the countryside known as the Meriden Gap and is in the ecclesiastical parish of the Diocese of Coventry. The village is east-northeast of Solihull, west-northwest of Coventry and east-southeast of Birmingham Airport. Birmingham city centre is east-northeast of the village. Known as " Alspath" in the Domesday Book, it was historically thought to be the geographical centre of England until the early 2000s, though after an analysis by the Ordnance Survey this was proved to be incorrect. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The 1990 English cricket season was the 91st in which the County Championship had been an official competition. The size of the seam on the cricket ball had been reduced markedly from 1989, and along with dry conditions and the extension of four-day cricket this enabled batsmen to make large scores and Graham Gooch became one of a handful of players to average over 100 in a first-class season. John Bracewell
John Garry Bracewell (born 15 April 1958) is a former New Zealand cricketer who was most recently the coach of the Irish national team. He played 41 Test matches between 1980 and 1990, as well as 53 One Day Internationals. He was the second New Zealand cricketer to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in Test cricket. He was the coach of the New Zealand cricket team between September 2003 and November 2008. His brother Brendon also played Test cricket, while his brothers Douglas and Mark played at first-class level. He was educated at Tauranga Boys' College and was in the 1st XI from 1973 to 1976. Maninder Singh (born 13 June 1965) is a former Indian cricket player and a cricket commentator. Singh has represented India in 35 Test matches and 59 One Day Internationals.
