Oliver Mitchell
: ''For other ships with a similar name see USS Mitchell.'' USS ''Oliver Mitchell'' (DE-417) was a built for the United States Navy during World War II. Post-war, after active participation in the Pacific War, her crew returned home with five battle stars to their credit. Namesake Oliver Mitchell was born on 14 March 1917 in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of Nicholas D. Mitchell and Margaret Ruth Green of Los Angeles. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on 23 May 1941 and was appointed Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Naval Reserve on 3 September 1941. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Reserves on 14 March 1942, was assigned to combat duty in the Solomon Islands in July. On 23 August 1942 he was killed in action while engaging Japanese destroyers off Ramos Island. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Design The ''John C. USS Mitchell
USS ''Mitchell'' (DE-43) was an constructed for the United States Navy during World War II. She was sent off into the Pacific Ocean to protect convoys and other ships from Japanese submarines and fighter aircraft. She performed escort and anti-submarine operations in dangerous battle areas and was awarded nine battle stars, a very high number for a ship of her type. She was originally laid down as BDE-43 on 12 January 1943 by the Puget Sound Navy Yard for transfer to the United Kingdom upon completion. However, she was ordered retained for service in the U.S. Navy. She was reclassified DE-43 on 16 June; named ''Mitchell'' on 23 June; launched on 1 August 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Albert E. Mitchell, widow of Ensign Mitchell; and commissioned on 17 November 1943. Namesake Albert Edward Mitchell was born on 25 December 1914 in Seattle, Washington. Hedgehog (weapon)
The Hedgehog (also known as an ''Anti-Submarine Projector'') was a forward-throwing anti-submarine weapon that was used primarily during the Second World War. The device, which was developed by the Royal Navy, fired up to 24 spigot mortars ahead of a ship when attacking a U-boat. It was deployed on convoy escort warships such as destroyers and corvettes to supplement the depth charges. As the mortar projectiles employed contact fuzes rather than time or barometric (depth) fuzes, detonation occurred directly against a hard surface such as the hull of a submarine making it more deadly than depth charges, which relied on damage caused by hydrostatic shockwaves. Ramos Island is an island in the Solomon Islands; it is located in Isabel Province. The first recorded sighting by Europeans was by the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña on 11 April 1568. A flight cadet is a military or civilian occupational title that is held by someone who is in training to perform aircrew duties in an airplane. The trainee does not need to become a pilot, as flight cadets may also learn to serve as a bombardier, navigator, or flight engineer. A service star is a miniature bronze or silver five-pointed star inch (4.8 mm) in diameter that is authorized to be worn by members of the eight uniformed services of the United States on medals and ribbons to denote an additional award or service period.
