Oliver Glasgow
Oliver Edwin James Glasgow KC (born 6 January 1972) is a barrister who specialises in criminal law. Since November 2015 he served as one of the Senior Treasury Counsel at the Old Bailey, prosecuting serious criminal cases. On 1 January 2021 he was appointed First Senior Treasury Counsel by the Attorney General, Suella Braverman KC. Early life The eldest son of Edwin Glasgow CBE QC (born 1945), Glasgow was educated at The University of Oxford, graduating with honours, MA (Oxon). He was called to the Bar from the Middle Temple in 1995 and practised as a barrister at the Central Criminal Court and on the South Eastern Circuit. Treasury Devil
Devilling is the period of training, pupillage or junior work undertaken by a person wishing to become an advocate in one of the English-speaking common law systems of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, and Australia. Etymology While there is currently no consensus on the origin of the term, it likely was borrowed from the existing phrase 'printer's devil', (or printer's apprentice) the origin of which is also in dispute. One possible explanation is that, in the earliest stages of moveable type, most if not all printings were of bibles and biblical passages. When an error occurred with the new and complex technology, the mistake would be blamed on the Devil. As the profession grew, young apprentices were equally easy to blame, and thus became the replacement scapegoat for any errors. Middle Temple
The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, commonly known simply as Middle Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers, the others being the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. Jeremy Baker
Sir Jeremy Russell Baker (born 9 February 1958) is a British judge of the High Court of Justice of Courts of England and Wales, England and Wales. He is correctly styled Mr Justice Jeremy Baker, conveniently distinguishing him from Andrew Baker. Career Baker was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1979. He was appointed an Assistant Recorder (judge), Recorder in 1996. In 1999, he became a King's Counsel. He was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and a circuit judge in 2010. On 25 March 2013, he was appointed a High Court judge (England and Wales), Justice of the High Court, and was assigned to the King's Bench Division. Constance Briscoe
Constance Briscoe (born 18 May 1957 in England) is a former barrister, and was one of the first black female recorders in England and Wales. In May 2014, she was jailed for three counts of doing an act tending to pervert the course of justice in '' R v Huhne and Pryce''. She was disbarred and removed from the judiciary. Legal career Briscoe studied Law at Newcastle University and graduated with a 2:2, financing her studies with several casual jobs, including working in a hospice. She took an MA at the University of Warwick. She was called to the bar in 1983. After pupillage with Michael Mansfield, she joined the chambers of Barbara Calvert. Alexander Blackman
The 2011 Helmand Province killing was the manslaughter of a wounded Taliban insurgent by Alexander Blackman, which occurred on 15 September 2011. Three Royal Marines, known during their trial as Marines A, B, and C, were anonymously tried by court martial. On 8 November 2013, Marines B and C were acquitted, but Blackman (Marine A) was initially found guilty of murder of the Afghan insurgent, in contravention of section 42 of the Armed Forces Act 2006. This made him the first British soldier to be convicted of a battlefield murder whilst serving abroad since the Second World War. On 6 December 2013, Blackman was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of ten years, and dismissed with disgrace from the Royal Marines.
