Oliver Eaton Cromwell
Oliver Eaton Cromwell Jr. (1892–1987), widely known as Tony Cromwell, was an American mountain climber who made many first ascents in the Canadian Rockies and was a member of the 1939 American Karakoram expedition to K2. Mount Cromwell, a mountain in the Sunwapta River Valley of Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada, was named after him. The mountain was named in 1972 by J. Monroe Thorington, to commemorate Cromwell's many first ascents in the Canadian Rockies, including his 1938 first ascent of his namesake mountain. The year after his first ascent of Mount Cromwell, Cromwell was a member, and base camp commander, of the tragic 1939 American Karakoram expedition to K2. 1939 American Karakoram Expedition To K2
The 1939 American Karakoram expedition to K2 was the unsuccessful second attempt by American mountaineers to climb the then-unclimbed second-highest mountain in the world, K2, following the 1938 reconnaissance expedition. Fritz Wiessner, the leader of the expedition, and Pasang Dawa Lama got to within of the summit via the Abruzzi Ridge – a difficult and arduous route – with Wiessner doing practically all the lead climbing. Through a series of mishaps, one of the team members, Dudley Wolfe, was left stranded near the top of the mountain after his companions had descended to base camp. Three attempts were made to rescue Wolfe. On the second attempt three Sherpas reached him after he had been alone for a week at over but he refused to try to descend. Mount Cromwell
Mount Cromwell is a mountain located in the Sunwapta River Valley of Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada. Cromwell lies two kilometers north of the east summit of Stutfield Peak. The mountain was named in 1972 by J. Monroe Thorington after Oliver Eaton (Tony) Cromwell, an American climber who made many first ascents in the Canadian Rockies. The first ascent was made in 1938 by E. Cromwell, E. Cromwell jr., F.S. North, J. Monroe Thorington, guided by Edward Feuz jr. In 2005, Bill Corbett, author of "The 11,000ers of the Canadian Rockies," climbed to the top of Mount Cromwell. At the summit, his GPS registered 11,006 feet. So perhaps Mount Cromwell should be included in the list of the Canadian Rocky Mountains that are over 11,000 feet in elevation. Sunwapta River
The Sunwapta River is a major tributary of the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. Course The headwaters of the Sunwapta River are near the Columbia Icefield in the valley west-northwest of Sunwapta Pass, which divides Jasper National Park from Banff National Park. Several kilometres down the valley from the pass is Sunwapta Lake, at the toe of the Athabasca Glacier, which is considered the nominal source for the river. The Sunwapta River then continues to run northwest through Jasper National Park, following the Icefields Parkway, and finally joins the Athabasca River shortly after Sunwapta Falls.
