In Portuguese, 'de Oliveira' means 'of the Olive Tree' and/or 'from the Olive Tree'. 'de Oliveira' is also a Sephardic surname, used prior to the start of the Portuguese Inquisition as a way for Jews to avoid prosecution and under torture to become new Catholics. Since those people were targeted, and since Portugal had just recently discovered Brazil (1500), many of those people fled to Brazil and other colonies of Portugal. Arnaldo Augusto de Oliveira Sales, GBM, CBE, GCIH, JP, (; 13 January 1920 – 6 March 2020) was a Hong Kong/Portuguese sports figure who was chairman of the Hong Kong Olympic Academy and president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. Elmar Oliveira (born June 28, 1950) is an American violinist. Early life The son of Portuguese immigrants, Elmar Oliveira was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut. Oliveira was nine when he began studying the violin with his brother John. At age 16 he appeared in a nationally-televised concert from Lincoln Center of child prodigy performers hosted by Leonard Bernstein, as part of Bernstein's Young People's Concerts series.
