Olive Tell
Olive Tell (September 27, 1894 – June 8, 1951) was a stage and screen actress from New York City. Biography Tell was educated in several cities in Europe. She and her younger actress sister Alma graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1915. The sisters began appearing in Broadway theaters around 1918. Olive made her New York debut in the drama ''Husband and Wife''. At first, she preferred acting in theater and detested her work on screen. She first appeared in motion pictures during World War I. Her early screen roles were in silent films, including '' The Silent Master'' (1917), ''The Unforeseen'' (1917), ''Her Sister'' (1917), and ''National Red Cross Pageant'' (1917). Alma Tell (March 27, 1898 – December 29, 1937) was an American stage and motion picture actress whose career in cinema began in 1915 and lasted into the sound films of the early 1930s. Early years Tell was born in New York City, the younger sister of stage and film actress Olive Tell. She attended schools in London and Paris and, with her sister, Olive, graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1915. Career Tell began her career as an actress in Syracuse, working for 12 weeks in stock theater. She acted in Boston and headed a stock company in Newark. She made her screen debut in the Edward José-directed drama ''Simon, the Jester'', released in September 1915. Tell's career never paralleled that of her older sister, and she often was cast in films as the second leading lady. ''The Trial of Mary Dugan'' is a 1929 American pre-Code film produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Norma Shearer. The film is based on the 1927 Broadway stage play ''The Trial of Mary Dugan'' by Bayard Veiller, who also directed the film. On stage the play had starred Ann Harding (in Shearer's role), who would come to Hollywood a few years later at the beginning of talkies. This was Veiller's first and only sound film directorial effort as he had directed several silent films before 1922. The play was also published as a novel authored by William Almon Wolff, published in 1928. The 1941 film of the same name is an MGM remake. ''Clothes'' is a 1920 American silent drama film produced and distributed by the Metro Pictures company. It is based on a 1906 Broadway play, ''Clothes'', by Channing Pollock and Avery Hopwood. The play starred Grace George with a young supporting player named Douglas Fairbanks. A 1914 silent film was produced and is now lost. This 1920 version from Metro starred Olive Tell. By all accounts this version is lost as well.
