Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society (french: Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste) is an institution in Quebec dedicated to the protection of Quebec francophone interests and to the promotion of Quebec sovereignism. It is known as the oldest patriotic association in French North America. The society's president from 2009 to 2014, Mario Beaulieu, subsequently became leader of the Bloc Québécois. Its current president, Maxime Laporte, is known for being coordinator (president) of ''Cap sur l'indépendance'', an umbrella group of various independentist organisations. History The society was created by Ludger Duvernay, a journalist for ''La Minerve'' in Lower Canada. It evolved from the Société ''Aide-toi et le ciel t'aidera'' ("help yourself and heaven will help you"), which was founded by Duvernay on March 8, 1834. Bernard Derome
Bernard Derome, CM, OQ (born January 10, 1944) is a Canadian broadcaster, who was news anchor for the weeknight editions of '' Le Téléjournal'' on Radio-Canada until December 18, 2008. Biography Derome studied at Saint Lawrence College under the instruction of the Clerics of Saint-Viateur. In 1963, when he was 19 years old, he began his first job in broadcasting at radio station CJBR in Rimouski. He moved to Canada's government funded French-language broadcaster, Radio-Canada, in 1965 and began anchoring ''Aujourd'hui'' (Today) in 1967. Derome was chief news anchor for Radio-Canada Television from 1970 to 1998, hosting the nightly ''Le Téléjournal''. He firmly established his credentials during the October Crisis and anchored the network's coverage of provincial and federal elections, including the 1980 referendum, the Charlottetown Accord referendum and the 1995 referendum. Jean Paré (born Quebec City, 1935) is a Quebecois journalist, writer and publisher. Biography Jean Paré completed classical studies at the Petit Séminaire de Québec and at the College Levis and then scientific studies at Montreal University (1955–1958). In 1992 he and some colleagues of other publishing houses were at the origins of the formation of the QAME (Quebecer Association of Magazine Editors), of which Paré was the first chairman until 1993. He was also broadcaster and radio commentator. Jean Paré wrote many books and also translated the work of many Anglo-Canadian writers, including Marshall McLuhan and Michael Ignatieff, former leader of the Canadian liberal party. Pierre Nadeau
Pierre Nadeau (19 December 19363 September 2019) was a Canadian journalist, television presenter and producer. He began in journalism as a radio reporter in 1956, inspired by his father's work with Radio-Canada. He interned at the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française where he was mentored by Léon Zitrone and Judith Jasmin, and later served as the Radio-Canada correspondent in Paris. He emulated the free exchange of information on RTL radio in France, which inspired his subsequent presentation style. He worked more than 30 years for Radio-Canada in Montreal as a reporter and host for news programs on current affairs, world events, and politics, and had two tenures as host of the news magazine ''Le Point''. Lysiane Gagnon
Lysiane Gagnon is a Canadian journalist based in Quebec. She has written for Montreal's '' La Presse'' since 1980 and Toronto's ''Globe and Mail'' since 1990. Gagnon was born in Montreal in 1941. From 1975 to 1980, she was a parliamentary correspondent. In 1975 she received the Olivar-Asselin Award, and has twice (in 1976 and 1982) been awarded the National Newspaper Awards prize. In 1984 she received the Salon de Montréal literary prize for her essay ''Vivre avec les hommes : un nouveau partage'' (Living with Men: A New Partnership). Roland Berthiaume (12 December 1927 – 8 February 2021) was a Canadian caricaturist. He was also known under the pseudonym Berthio. Judith Jasmin
Judith Jasmin (July 10, 1916 – October 20, 1972) was a journalist from Quebec. Born in Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada, she was the first woman from Quebec to become a ''grand reporter'' (special correspondent). Jasmin's journalistic career began at Radio-Canada's world service at the end of the 1940s. It was there she met future Quebec premier René Lévesque with whom she would go on to co-host the radio program ''Carrefour''. In 1953, Jasmin entered Radio-Canada's television news service where she made a name for herself with such programs as ''Reportages'' and ''Conférence de presse''. All the while, Jasmin continued to take to the streets, listening to the people in order to denounce injustices. She was a founding member of the ''Mouvement laïque de langue française'' ("The Francophone Secular Movement").
