Oldham Borough Council
Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, branded and commonly referred to as Oldham Council, is the local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of ten in Greater Manchester and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Oldham. It is composed of 60 councillors, three for each of the 20 electoral wards of the borough. The council is controlled by the Labour Party, the leader of the council is Amanda Chadderton who has been in post since May 2022. The primary opposition parties are the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party, along with the Failsworth Independents Party and two independent members. Oldham Civic Centre
Oldham Civic Centre is a municipal building in West Street, Oldham, England. History The low-level western section of the Civic Centre was originally built as offices for the housing and social services departments as well as the Regional Health Authority and was completed in 1962. The facility was extended to include a 15-storey tower, designed by Cecil Howitt & Partners and built by Henry Boot so enabling the council to move out of the aging Oldham Town Hall into the enlarged complex. The enlarged complex, which incorporated an event and conference venue known as the "Queen Elizabeth Hall" intended to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on 1 March 1977. Arooj Shah
Arooj Shah is a British Labour politician and since May 2023 is the leader of Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council in Greater Manchester, a position she also previously held between 2021 and 2022. As leader she is a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and is the combined authority's portfolio lead for Equalities and Communities. She was the first Muslim woman to take charge of a council in the north of England. First elected to the council in 2012, she was the councillor for the Chadderton South ward. She was elected as leader of the council in May 2021 after her predecessor Sean Fielding lost his seat in that year's election. In England, local authorities are required to adopt one of three types of executive arrangements, having either an "elected mayor and cabinet", a "leader and cabinet", or a "committee system". The type of arrangement used determines how decisions will be made within the council. Marjory Lees
Marjory Lees (9 September 1878 – 11 May 1970) was a British suffragist and local politician. Lees was active in the local women's movement in Oldham, Greater Manchester where she became the honorary secretary of the local branch of the National Union of Women Workers. Life Marjory Lees was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester in 1878, her mother was politician and activist Dame Sarah Lees. Marjory, like her mother, became active in local politics and the wider women's suffrage movement. She made charitable to donations to the local community, began a career as a poor law guardian and became president of the Oldham Women's Suffrage Society. Lees also took part in the Suffrage Pilgrimage in 1913. In 1919, she was elected to Oldham council following her mother's resignation from the same seat, serving on the council until she stepped down in 1934.
