Old Woods, Shropshire
Old Woods is a hamlet in Shropshire, England, located to the north-west of Shrewsbury. It is alternatively known and spelt as Oldwood, Oldwoods and Old Wood. Situation It is situated on a lane between the small villages of Merrington (to the east) and Walford (to the west) and is in the parish of Pimhill, though borders the parish of Baschurch, which is one of the nearest substantial villages. Another large nearby village is Bomere Heath. The B5067, Shrewsbury to Baschurch road, runs to the west of the settlement. The centre of the hamlet lies at 89m above sea level, with the ground rising towards the northwest (towards Merrington Green) and in this direction lie two sizeable woodlands: Old Wood and Oldwood Coppice. The dialling code for here is 01939 and the postcode is SY4 3xx. Pimhill
Pimhill is a geographically large civil parish in Shropshire, England, to the north of Shrewsbury. It is named after a hill, which rises to 163m, sometimes spelt Pim Hill. In recent times the parish is more well known as "Bomere Heath and District". As well as the large village of Bomere Heath, the small villages of Albrighton, Atcham, Fitz, Leaton, Merrington and Preston Gubbals, as well as the hamlets of Crossgreen, Dunnsheath, Forton Heath, Grafton, Mytton, Old Woods and Walford Heath, lie in the parish. The 2001 census recorded 2008 people living in the parish, in 853 households, the population increasing to 2,118 at the 2011 Census. Near Pim Hill is Lea Hall, a notable Elizabethan brick house and dovecote. Coppice
Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management which exploits the capacity of many species of trees to put out new shoots from their stump or roots if cut down. In a coppiced wood, which is called a copse, young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level, resulting in a stool. New growth emerges, and after a number of years, the coppiced tree is harvested, and the cycle begins anew. Shrewsbury railway station is in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Built in 1848, it was designated a grade II listed building in 1969. The station is north west of Birmingham New Street. Yorton Railway Station
Yorton railway station serves the villages of Yorton and Clive in Shropshire, England. It is 7¼ miles (11.5 km) north of Shrewsbury on the Welsh Marches Line towards Crewe. It has two platforms and dates from 1858. Trains only stop here upon request. The station was designated for the axe in Dr Beeching's "The Reshaping of British Railways" in the 1960s; however it was ultimately saved. Facilities The station is unstaffed and has no ticket provision (so these must be bought on the train or in advance); the old buildings still stand but are now privately owned. Oldwoods Halt Railway Station
Oldwoods Halt was a minor station located north of Shrewsbury on the GWR's to main line. It was opened in the nineteen thirties as part of the GWR's halt construction programme, aimed at combatting growing competition from bus services. Today the route is part of the Shrewsbury to Chester line. Nothing now remains of the halt although the area of the adjacent goods siding/s can still be seen on the west side of the line. Historical Services Express trains did not call at Oldwoods Halt, only local services.
