Old Post Office (Watertown, South Dakota)
The Old Post Office ( NRHP-listed as Watertown Post Office) is a historic building located at 26 South Broadway in Watertown, South Dakota. The Watertown Post Office was built in 1908 and served until 1976. From 1976 to 2009, it was known as Old Post Office Square, and housed several tenants. From 2009 to 2014 it was home to KXLG in Watertown. It is currently the law office of Nancy Turbak Berry. Watertown is a city in and the county seat of Codington County, South Dakota, United States. Watertown is home to the Redlin Art Center which houses many of the original art works produced by Terry Redlin, one of America's most popular wildlife artists. Watertown is located between Pelican Lake and Lake Kampeska, from which Redlin derived inspiration for his artwork. The population was 22,655 at the 2020 census, making Watertown the 5th largest city in South Dakota. It is also the principal city of the Watertown Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Codington and Hamlin counties. Watertown also is home to the Bramble Park Zoo. Watertown's residential real estate is considered the most expensive in South Dakota for cities of its size; the median price for a home in Watertown is approximately $200,000. KXLG (99.1 FM) is a radio station serving the Watertown, South Dakota area (licensed to serve Milbank, South Dakota). The station is owned by TMRG Broadcasting, LLC. It airs soft adult contemporary music to fill time between local business advertising features. The advertising features often include live on-site broadcasts or telephone "interviews" with local business operators. History The station signed on in 1981 originally serving the Huron, South Dakota area. It most recently had a country format as KZNC ''Kissin Country 99''. In December 2003, Dakota Communications Ltd. (Duane Butt, president) reached an agreement to acquire this station and KIJV from Three Eagles Communications as part of a two-station deal for a reported $400,000. Nancy J. Turbak Berry (born September 17, 1956) is a former Democratic member of the South Dakota Senate, representing the 5th district from 2006 to 2010. Early life and education Nancy Turbak was born in Watertown, South Dakota. She started school in a one-room schoolhouse in Kranzburg, South Dakota. She attended Harvard University where she graduated ''cum laude'' with a B.A. in government. She then went on to obtain her J.D. at the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley.
