Gadsden County is a county located in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,826. Its county seat is Quincy. Gadsden County is included in the Tallahassee, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gadsden County is the only majority (over 50%) African-American county in Florida. History Gadsden County was created in 1823. It was named for James Gadsden of South Carolina, who served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp in Florida in 1818. Gadsden County is historically known for its tobacco crop which is obsolete today. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (2.3%) is water. Gadsden County is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Quincy is a city in and the county seat of Gadsden County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,972 at the 2010 census, up from 6,982 at the 2000 census. Quincy is part of the Tallahassee metropolitan area. History Established in 1828, Quincy is the county seat of Gadsden County, and was named for John Quincy Adams. State Road 65 (SR 65) is a north–south route in the eastern panhandle, running from a junction with US 98/319 near Eastpoint northwards through the Apalachicola National Forest to SR 12 west of Quincy, near US 90. Route description The route begins at US 98/319 in Green Point, a rural community east of Eastpoint on the Gulf of Mexico in Franklin County, Florida. For the road's first it runs straight north, and after this curves to the northwest. From here the road becomes North Shore Bay Road and winds around the southern border of the Tates Hell Swamp. As the road enters Beverly, it faces an at-grade crossing with an Apalachicola Northern Railroad line and then curves straight north again where it enters Apalachicola National Forest.
