Wu Nien-jen
Wu Nien-jen (; born ; 5 August 1952) is a Taiwanese screenwriter, Film director, director, and writer. He is one of the most prolific and highly regarded scriptwriters in Taiwan and a leading member of the New Taiwanese Cinema, although he has also acted in a number of films. He starred in Edward Yang's 2000 film ''Yi Yi''. Wu is a well-known supporter of the Democratic Progressive Party and has filmed commercials for the party. Early and personal life Wu was born into a coal miner's family in 1952 and raised in the mining town of Jiufen. He went into the army after high school, and after being discharged in 1976, went to work at a library while pursuing a degree in accounting at the Fu Jen Catholic University night school. He started writing short stories for newspapers in 1975, when he was still an accounting major. The 57th Academy Awards were presented March 25, 1985, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. Jack Lemmon presided over the ceremonies. Sun Yueh
Sun Yueh (; 26 October 1930 – 1 May 2018) was a Taiwanese actor. Born in Yuyao, Zhejiang on 26 October 1930, he moved to Taiwan in 1949. Sun appeared in his first film in 1962, and retired in 1989. Over the course of his career, he received the Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1968, and the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor in 1983. Sun stopped smoking after his baptism as a Christian in 1981, and in later life became a humanitarian known for his work with the John Tung Foundation. He cautioned youth against the use of tobacco, and drew attention to ailments related to smoking, namely chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In 2010, Sun received a Golden Horse Award for special contributions. Sun underwent treatment for gallstones and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at National Taiwan University Hospital in March 2018, and died of sepsis and multiple organ failure on 1 May 2018 at the age of 87. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1957, and regularly since 1980. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. For the purposes of Oscar submissions, AMPAS recognizes Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong as separate entities, and each one regularly submits a film to the competition.
