Old House, South Carolina
Old House is an unincorporated community in Jasper County, South Carolina, United States. The community is located at the intersection of SC 336 and SC 462; east of Ridgeland. The community is named after the Old House Plantation, which was settled 1740 by Daniel Heyward. The plantation included a tidal mill, textile factory and an import-export business, all of which were destroyed by fire in 1865. The site includes the grave of Thomas Heyward, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence and of the Articles of Confederation as a representative of South Carolina. South Carolina Highway 336 (SC 336) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It serves to connect Ridgeland with nearby U.S. Route 321 (US 321) and SC 462. Route description SC 336 is a two-lane rural highway predominantly throughout its route. Starting at US 321 in Tillman, it goes east into downtown Ridgeland, then continuing east to SC 462 in Old House where it ends. Its routing east of Interstate 95 (I-95) takes a series of turns, making the highway's routing a bit disjointing. White Hall Plantation House Ruins and Oak Avenue is a historic plantation site located near Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. The site consists of the ruins of a brick house with tabby wings and twin tabby flanking outbuildings; a tabby retaining wall; and a massive double avenue of oaks planted in the late-18th or early-19th century. The plantation house was built between 1771 and 1776, then enlarged between 1786 and 1791. The house at White Hall burned about 1870 and was not renovated or occupied afterward. Honey Hill-Boyd's Neck Battlefield is a historic battlefield site located near Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. The boundary encompasses the site of the American Civil War Battle of Honey Hill, November 30, 1864, as well as the Federal enclave on Boyd's Neck and other related areas of the Honey Hill campaign, November 29, 1864 to January 11, 1865. The Battle of Honey Hill was one of the three largest Civil War battles fought in South Carolina, and was one of the most notable Civil War engagements involving African American troops. Ridgeland, South Carolina
Ridgeland is a town in Jasper and Beaufort counties, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2020 census, a 7.1% decrease from 2010. It has been the county seat of Jasper County since the county's formation in 1912. As defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, Ridgeland is included within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort metropolitan area. Ridgeland is home to the Ridgeland Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Ridgeland was originally known as "Gopher Hill" in 1894, derived from the gopher tortoise, which is indigenous to the area. Thomas Heyward, Jr
Thomas Heyward Jr. (July 28, 1746 – March 6, 1809) was an American Founding Father, lawyer, jurist, and politician. Heyward was active politically during the Revolutionary Era. As a member of the Continental Congress representing South Carolina, he signed the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. Heyward's imprisonment in Florida by the British for nearly a year and the loss of a considerable number of slaves led to his being widely proclaimed a martyr of the revolution. Life Heyward was born in St. Luke's Parish (now known as Jasper County), South Carolina, the son of Mary (Miles) and Daniel Heyward. He was educated at home, then traveled to England to study law where he was a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1775 and the following year was the last delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence.
