Old Hemp
Old Hemp (1 September 1893 – May 1901) was a stud dog considered to be the progenitor to the Border Collie breed. He was owned by Adam Telfer, and was used as a working dog to herd sheep. His style was different from that commonly seen during his era, as he worked far more quietly than the other sheepdogs of the time. This style was adopted and used by other breeders and trainers, and became the most common style among Border Collies within a few generations, with his descendants becoming successful international sheepdog champions. Life and herding career In September 1893, Old Hemp was born to Adam Telfer's two dogs in West Woodburn, Northumberland. Hemp's mother, Meg, was a reticent and very strong-eyed black sheepdog; while Hemp's father, Roy, was a loose-eyed black, white, and tan sheepdog with a good natured temperament. Border Collie
The Border Collie is a Scottish breed of herding dog of medium size. Widely considered to be the most intelligent dog breed, they are descended from landrace sheepdogs once found all over the British Isles, but became standardised in the Anglo-Scottish border region. They are now mostly used as working dogs to herd livestock, specifically sheep. Border Collies are extremely energetic, acrobatic, and athletic. They frequently compete with great success in sheepdog trials and a range of dog sports like dog obedience, disc dog, herding and dog agility. International Sheep Dog Society

This remains the intention today. Without a good working dog, the shepherd's work on both the hills and the lowlands would be impossible. It seeks to achieve this by, amongst other things, managing the registration of dogs in its stud book. The International Sheep Dog Society was founded in 1906, with the purpose of "improving the shepherd's dog". A sheepdog trial (also herding event, stock dog trial or simply dog trial) — is a competition or test for working abilities of herding breeds dogs. It is a type of dog sport that emerged in the 1860s in New Zealand. By the 1870s regular trials were also being held in Australia and the United Kingdom, and by the end of the 20th century gained popularity in many countries of the world. A breed registry, also known as a herdbook, studbook or register, in animal husbandry and the hobby of animal fancy, is an official list of animals within a specific breed whose parents are known. Animals are usually registered by their breeders while they are young. Eric Halsall
Eric Halsall (18 March 1920 – 21 October 1996) was an English countryman, author and television presenter. He was best known for his fourteen-year run as a commentator on BBC TV series ''One Man and His Dog''. Early life Halsall was born and brought up in Burnley, Lancashire, attending Burnley Grammar School. He was a keen footballer and had a trial at Burnley F.C. Turned down by the RAF, he joined the ''Burnley Express'', initially in advertising and then as a writer. He married Rita Greenwood in 1942. Career Halsall worked from the 1950s until 1985 as a farms manager for the National Coal Board. However, he was best known as the presenter of the long-running TV series ''One Man and His Dog'', in which he commentated on sheepdog trials for 14 years from 1975 to 1989.
